Are Electronic Cigarettes Really Better Than the Real Thing?

By: Natasha Uspensky, CHHC

Are Electronic Cigarettes Really Better Than the Real Thing? | The Organic Beauty BlogThese days, electronic cigarettes are pretty ubiquitous, with people puffing away in places cigarettes haven’t dreamed of going in years. I actually saw someone smoking an e-cigarette in the lobby of my gym the other day!  But are these electronic alternatives really better than the real thing?  The market is totally unregulated and the research is murky, but one thing is for sure, these addictive high-tech gadgets are anything but “safe.”

The biggest health marketing claim purported by electronic cigarette companies is that the absence tobacco and all the other harmful chemicals that are added to cigarettes render it completely harmless to your health.  That, however, is being disproven with more and more research studies coming out each year.  Although it is definitely safer than tobacco products, liquid nicotine, in its inhaled form, is definitely not devoid of harmful effects.

Eat G-BOMBS to Decrease Risk of Breast Cancer

Eat G-BOMBS to Decrease Risk of Breast Cancer Angelina Jolie | The Organic Beauty Blog

By: Natasha Uspensky, CHHC

With Angelina Jolie’s recent publicity for her decision to get a preventative double mastectomy after finding out she was positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation, everyone is all abuzz about whether or not they should get tested, and whether preventative mastectomies are viable measures to take for peace of mind. The truth is, genetic testing is not financially feasible for a lot of people, and even for those women who do test positive, parting with their beautiful boobies (and the subsequent reconstructive surgery) just doesn’t sound like their cup of tea.  So what’s a girl to do?

As a holistic nutritionist, I am always going on and on about the cancer preventing power of food.  Making changes to your diet to increase breast cancer-fighting foods decreases risk even if you are a carrier of the BRCA1 gene mutation, or have another genetic predisposition towards breast cancer.  Truth is, eating healthy, potently anti-carcinogenic foods is something every woman has access to, and it should be the first line of defense to decrease risk or breast and other cancers, regardless of whether or not you are at risk.

One of my absolute favorite nutrition teachers, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, coined the acronym “G-BOMBS” in his book Super Immunity, and it’s a wonderful way to remember what foods to increase every single day to decrease your breast cancer risk (as well as your risk of all other cancers).

G-BOMBS: Top 6 Breast Cancer Prevention Foods

1. G – GREENS:

Greens are the number one most potent cancer preventing and fighting foods.  The phytonutrients in dark leafies pack a potent cancer preventing punch with lots of folate, calcium and carotenoids.  Cruciferous greens (like kale, broccoli, bok choy) are high in glucosinolates, which are a key ingredient in cancer prevention.  Plus, they also scrub your system of the excess estrogens that can lead to breast cancer and all kinds of reproductive system issues, which makes them the absolute best food for breast cancer prevention.  Extra bonus?  Greens lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and can slow the signs of aging.  Plus, they’re amazing for weight loss!  Make sure to eat greens at least twice a day!

2.  B – BEANS:

A study in the International Journal of Cancer showed that women who eat beans and lentils frequently have a significantly lower risk of developing breast cancer than women who don’t.  Beans stabilize blood sugar and hormone levels, are loaded with fiber, and are an amazing source of calcium, iron, and protein, making them the ideal choice for replacing some animal protein in your diet (which is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer).  Beans are also amazing for weight loss and reducing cravings!  Make sure to eat beans several times a week!

3. O – ONIONS:

Onions, along with their cousins in the allum family, garlic, leeks, scallions, and shallots, are super high in organosulfur compounds, which prevents growth of cancer cells, detoxifies carcinogens, and have anti-inflammatory effects that lower cancer risk substantially.  Not only that, but these powerhouses have immune-boosting and anti-diabetic effects on the body as well.  These puppies are also great for digestive health, general detox, and cold-prevention.  Make sure to cook with onions and garlic everyday!

4.  M – MUSHROOMS:

In a recent Chinese study, women who consumed fresh, cooked mushrooms daily had a 64% decrease in risk of breast cancer!  The study also found that women who consumed mushrooms daily and drank green tea daily had an 89% decrease in risk! 89%!!!  That’s huge.  Now imagine what these two potent cancer preventers could do if they were a part of a diet high in all the other G-BOMBS??  Even genetics couldn’t stand a chance!  In addition to preventing all kinds of cancer, mushrooms also have an anti-inflammtory effect on the body, slow signs of aging, block the production of excess estrogen.  Amazing!  Make sure to eat cooked mushrooms at least 4 times a week, or daily if you have a hereditary predisposition toward breast cancer.

5.  B – BERRIES:

You’ve been hearing me talk forever about all the health benefits of berries.  Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries are nature’s perfect superfoods, loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, which are vital in decreasing your risk of breast cancer.  These beauties slow the growth of tumors, cognitive decline, and aging, and protect your heart as well!  Instead of eating candy and sweets, the sugar in which increases risk of cancer and inflammation, reach for nature’s candy, berries!  Eat a handful of berries every day.

6.  S – SEEDS:

Nuts and seeds truly are two of nature’s perfect foods.  Loaded with healthy fats, protein, minerals (like cancer protective selenium), and vitamins, these little guys are potent cancer-fighters.  Flaxseeds, hemp seeds, walnuts and chia seeds are amazing sources of omega-3’s, which have been shown to be super effective at blocking the growth of breast cancer cells.  Nuts and seeds are filling, making them an amazing weight loss food, and they also prevent against heart disease and diabetes! Make sure to eat a handful of nuts every day, and use flaxseed oil in your smoothies and on your salads!

Eat the Rainbow: Powerful Health Benefits of Colorful Foods!

By: Stephanie Heino

Eat the Rainbow | The Organic Beauty

Did you know that the color of fruits and vegetables can actually give you specific information about the benefits of a specific fruit or vegetables. Take a look at how each color is associated with certain health benefits, and learn how to eat the rainbow!

The Yellow Power. Yellow foods such as pineapple, citrus, corn, yellow tomatoes, yellow grapefruit, papaya and yellow peppers all contain important nutrients to keep the body functioning properly. For example, pineapple contains bromelain which is an enzyme that contributes proper functioning of the digestive system. Did you know that citruses can inhibit the formation of cancerous cells, and therefore protecting against breast cancer, skin cancer, etc. In addition, it’s no secret that vitamin C and folic acid found in citrus fruits have an amazing effect on the immune system by strengthening it, while also reducing the negative effect of free radicals. You may not think of corn as a miracle vegetable but it actually is a significant source of lutein and zeaxanthin which are two remarkable substances that reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration caused by aging. On top of this yellow foods are also rich in flavonoids and fitonutrients which plays a detoxifying role.
The Red Power. In fruits and vegetables like peppers, radishes, cherries, watermelon, red grapefruit, strawberries, red grapes, pomegranate, and red apples we find an important substance called lycopene which can significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer up to 35%. This substance also has a significant role in preventing heart diseases, ovarian cancer and also for the recycling of glutathione, also called the protein of life. This is one of the most powerful antioxidants produced in our bodies and it plays an amazing role in eliminating toxins from our body. Red fruit and vegetables have so many benefits to your health, and what I found most amazing is that by eating only a half of cup of tomatoes you can reduce ovarian cancer up to 60%! Wow, I am having a salad full of tomatoes tonight, so many nutrients, super low in calories and  prevention of ovarian cancer. Score!
The Orange Power. This truly spectacular color is found in foods such as carrots, mangoes, peaches, nectarines, pumpkin, sweet potato, oranges, squash and melon, and gets its color from  beta-carotene, a terpenoid that is converted by the body into vitamin A. Vitamin A plays an important role in our body from helping to smooth the function of white blood cells to acting as an important beneficial antioxidant. This vitamin, along with two other types of carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, is essential to strengthen the immune system and to give us good vision. Beta-carotene also has a huge effect on preventing the development of cancer cells in the stomach, as well as in preventing heart diseases by decreasing cholesterol levels.
The Green Power. Green is known to be the color of life, and I think many people associate the vibrant color with health and vibrancy. We have been told to eat our greens for as long as we can remember, and once and for all, we will tell you why your parents didn’t let you leave dinner before you had eaten your leafy greens. The green pigment is found in green apples, grapes, kiwi, avocado, pistachio nuts, broccoli, spinach, zucchini, lettuce, asparagus, celery, peas, cucumber and  so many more. In green plants we find chlorophyl,l which helps in lowering the risk of liver cancer. In addition to this substance we find nutrients like potassium, fiber, folic acid, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C, iron, carotenoids and omega 3 fatty acids. As if this wasn’t enough of a reason to go make a green juice right now, we also find tryptophan in the green plants, which is a substance that helps strengthen bones and teeth, and gives us a good vision while defending our body against cancer! So go eat your greens!

Gel Manicures Increase Cancer Risk

By: Natasha Uspensky, CHHC

Gel Manicures Increase Cancer Risk | The Organic Beauty BlogThe Skin Cancer Foundation just released the conclusion that the UV light emitted from lamps for gel manicures do carry risk, albeit low, of cancer, specifically squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).  This form of skin cancer is mainly caused by chronic UV exposure, and is very common on the hands and around the finger nails.  Around 700,000 people are diagnosed with SCC every year in the US.  Women who get regular gel manicures are at risk!

In addition to the carcinogenic UV rays, gel manicures usually are loaded with all kinds of other cancer-causing ingredients like BHA and methyl acrylate.  We recommend avoiding gel manicures altogether. There are many non-UV alternatives, like a gel topcoat, available at salons.  If you absolutely must get gel manicures, apply SPF 15 sunblock to your hands beforehand to protect yourself against the harmful rays.

10 Foods That Prevent Breast Cancer (And 5 That Cause It)

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I thought it would be awesome to feature some amazingly healthy foods that have been shown to reduce risk of breast cancer.  Effectively minimizing your risk of all types of cancer is a holistic undertaking, involving healthy lifestyle changes, stress management, and avoiding toxic chemicals and carcinogens, but starting with what you put in your body is always best!  Load up on these potent foods, especially if you have a family history of breast cancer.

  1. 10 Foods That Prevent Breast Cancer (And 5 That Cause It) | The Organic Beauty BlogCruciferous vegetables:  Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, and all other veggies in this powerhouse family contain glucosinolates and indole-3-carbinole, which lower levels of the types of estrogen that can cause breast cancer.  In general, cruciferous veggies have remarkable hormone balancing effects, which are wonderful for women’s health!
  2. Yellow-Orange vegetables:  Carrots, orange bell peppers, sweet potatoes and other orange veggies are super high in beta-carotene, which lowers breast cancer risk.
  3. Tomatoes:  These red beauties are high in lycopene, especially when cooked.  Lycopene lowers risk of breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men!  So load up on organic ketchup, organic tomato sauces, fresh and sun-dried tomatoes.
  4. 10 Foods That Prevent Breast Cancer (And 5 That Cause It) | The Organic Beauty BlogRed Grapes:  Red grapes have been shown to significantly reduce breast cancer risk, so eat up and have an occasional glass of red wine as well. Never exceed more than one glass of red wine (or any other alcoholic beverage) a day, however, because crossing that threshold has actually been shown to increase breast cancer risk by 20-25%.
  5. Dark Leafy Greens:  These cancer-fighting all-stars should be a HUGE part of everyone’s diet.  Research has shows that breast cancer risk was cut in half in women who ate a full serving of spinach at least twice a week.  Make sure to vary your greens to get the full benefit… kale, swiss chard, and collards are other great options!
  6. 10 Foods That Prevent Breast Cancer (And 5 That Cause It) 4 | The Organic Beauty BlogCold-Water Fish:  Salmon, anchovies and sardines are loaded with omega-3’s and are low on mercury.  Research shows that women with higher tissue levels of omega-3’s have much lower incidence of breast cancer.  An added bonus is lower risk of heart disease, inflammation, and Alzheimer’s!
  7. Flaxseeds and Flaxseed Oil:  Aside from high levels of omega-3’s, flaxseeds also contain high levels of lignans, which lower risk of estrogen-dependent cancers.
  8. Green Tea:  This potent drink is high in the compound, EGCG, which significantly lowers risk of developing breast cancer, and inhibits the growth of the cancer in women who already have it.  Opt for a cup a day of pure green tea (not decaf, not bottled) each day, sweetened with raw honey, stevia, or agave.
  9. 10 Foods That Prevent Breast Cancer (And 5 That Cause It) 3 | The Organic Beauty BlogWhole Grains:  Studies have shown that women who eat a lot of refined grains had a higher occurrence of breast cancer, due to the hormone altering effects of these foods.  On the flipside, women who consumed plenty of whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, rye, and bran, had much lower risk and incidence of breast cancer.
  10. Whole Soy:  Organic, non-GMO, whole soy foods like tempeh and edamame have been shown to reduce cancer risk due to their isoflavinoids, which act as weak estrogens that inhibit the effects of more powerful, cancer-causing estrogens.  BUT, beware of processed soy, which is found in packaged foods and junk foods, and can flood your system with too much of these estrogens over time.  Opt for whole soy foods a few times a week, and avoid all foods containing processed soy.

There are also several foods that have been shown to increase risk of breast cancer.  Avoiding these foods is a crucial part of eating to lower your risk!

  1. High-Fat Meat & Dairy:  The saturated fats in meat and dairy not only raise risk of breast cancer (and all other forms of cancer), but also cause obesity and high BMI.  Maintaining a BMI of over 25 raises breast cancer risk significantly.  If you eat dairy, keep it to low-fat varieties, and treat cheese as a treat (like ice cream!), not a dietary staple!  If you eat meat, keep it to chicken, fish, and eggs, and cut out the red meat, processed meat (like hot dogs and lunch meats), and bacon.
  2. 10 Foods That Prevent Breast Cancer (And 5 That Cause It) 5 | The Organic Beauty BlogAlcohol:  As I wrote above, drinking more than 1 alcoholic beverage per day raises risk of breast cancer by 20-25%, making it one of the most substantial dietary cancer risk factors.  Keep it under 1 drink a day, and stick to red wine when you do drink.
  3. Doughnuts: Not only are these diet busters terrible for your waistline and general health, they also increase cancer risk!  Loaded with refined  flour, refined sugar, hydrogenated oils, and acrylamides (created when starchy foods are fried), these bad guys pack a 1-2 cancer-causing punch.
  4. 10 Foods That Prevent Breast Cancer (And 5 That Cause It) 2 | The Organic Beauty BlogFrench Fries: Like doughnuts, these are loaded with fatty hydrogenated oils and acrylamides, which raise cancer risk significantly.  Opt for oven-baked or roasted potatoes instead!
  5. Sugar:  Refined white sugar, and all the foods that contain it, raise blood glucose levels, which in turn raises insulin.  High levels of insulin in the blood causes an increase free-circulating estrogens, which, you guessed it, cause breast cancer.  Avoid all sugary baked goods, candies, cereals, and processed foods, and forgo that scoop of sugar in your coffee or tea.  Opt instead for stevia, agave, or raw honey, which can all be used in baking as well!  And definitely avoid artificial sweeteners like Splenda, Nutrisweet, Equal, and Sweet & Low, all of which may increase the risk of cancer and other diseases.

Cancer, Nutrition and Coping after Chemo

Cancer, Nutrition and Coping after Chemo | The Organic Beauty BlogCancer treatments often alter our ability to meet some necessary nutritional needs. Take chemotherapy treatment — a necessary evil that wrecks havoc on the body. Chemotherapy causes a decrease in our red blood cells, which leads to anemia, the path to vitamin deficiencies, which weakens our immune system little by little. One of the ways to combat these problems is by eating well and maintaining a good weight, both during and after chemotherapy treatments.

Eating enough calories can help the body recover quicker and heal during and after chemotherapy treatments. Once weight loss begins, muscle loss, strength and energy will follow. Research studies have proven that Omega-3 supplements can help. Omega3 fatty acids tend tohelp cancer patients maintain muscle mass and stabilize weight. The Journal reported that 16 patients, taking a daily supplement of 2.2 grams of fish oil, for 10 weeks were able to maintain their weight, while 24 patients, did not take the daily fish oil supplement, and continued to lose weight. Those patients with the largest amounts of fish oil in their blood had gained muscle mass. Scientists theorize that fish oil may interfere with cancer, thereby providing a way to beat undernourishment in patients.Cancer, Nutrition and Coping after Chemo | The Organic Beauty Blog

Ways to improve your appetite:

  • Start meals with solid foods first. This will help you avoid filling up on liquids. Solid foods fill the stomach up and liquids leave the stomach quickly. Unless you are on a liquid-only diet, avoid soups unless they are thick and filled with vegetables.
  • Break up meals into six or more sittings per day. One of the side effects of cancer treatments is diminished appetite. Loss of appetite also depends on the type of cancer and the type of treatment. In general, it is often difficult to eat a full meal. Eat light meals, and don’t worry so much if you do not feel like eating. Staying hydrated is more important. Drinking water, broth, non-acidic fruit juices and vegetable juices works best.
  • Start an exercise plan. Of course, get approval from your physician first. Physical activity can boost your appetite and help to maintain muscle mass. Exercise will also promote more bowel movements, which flushes toxins from the system.
  • Take your time and chew slowly. After the meal, do not rush to lie down; remain upright to help avoid nausea and heartburn.

Coping with treatment side effects is no easy task. Exercise and improving the appetite can help patients cope with effects such as the coughing and excess fluid. Certain foods can be especially helpful in battling certain cancers, such as broth and vegetable juices serving as natural cough suppressants for mesothelioma cancer patients.

No one can predict exactly how each patient is going to feel. Cancer is complex and everyone experiences this disease differently. The best advice is to always be proactive and anticipate ways to deal with your nutritional needs.

Ladies, Lay off the Fries and Chips!

A new study in the British Journal of Cancer found that acrylamide, the chemical that is released when starchy foods (particularly potatoes) are fried at high temperatures, is associated with an average of 40% greater risk of breast cancer among pre-menopausal women.  So not only do fried foods pile on the pounds, make your skin breakout, and increase your risk of heart disease, they now officially cause cancer as well…  Think about it… are those Fritos really worth that much risk?

Step One to Naturalize Your Life: Read Your Ingredients!

Step 1: Read Your Ingredients | The Organic Beauty Blog

With the effects of the somewhat recent trend toward all things natural and organic (not to mention local, seasonal, Greenmarket, etc., etc.), most of us have gotten used to reading the ingredients on the things we put in our bodies.  Most of us know to avoid high fructose corn syrup, bleached and refined sugars and flours, trans fats, and artificial colors and flavors.  But do you know that there are equally (if not more) harmful ingredients in your beauty and cleaning products?  Just as we read the labels of what we put in our pantries, we also have to read the ingredients of what we put in our medicine cabinets.
