Enhanced Water Is Not Your Friend!

By: Natasha Uspensky, CHHC

Enhanced Water Is Not Your Friend! | The Organic Beauty Blog

One of the first questions I ask my clients is how much water they drink.  And one of the most common answers I get is “well, I drink lots of tea and VitaminWater!”  Guess what guys, VitaminWater and other “enhanced,” flavored water-type beverages are NOT water, they are really no better than soda, and they have the same negative effects on your body!  Don’t believe me?  Pick up a bottle of Vitamin Water and read the ingredients.  The 2nd and 3rd ingredients are sugar!  With the additional additives of color, flavor, and “stabilizers,” you are drinking a beverage that is really no different from soda, no matter how many vitamins they add.

What about the other guys on the market? Mio Liquid Water Enhancer, Skinny Water, Propel Fitness Water, Dasani Drops are the watered down equivalents of diet soda.  Instead of sugar, they feature artificial sweeteners like sucralose, dextrose, or aspartame, which are linked to obesity, digestive problems, neurological issues, diabetes, and cancer.  These guys kill off the beneficial bacteria in your gut, which wreaks all kinds of havoc on your system, and can lead to an overgrowth of candida (read more about candida overgrowth). They’re also loaded with a whole bunch of questionable ingredients that definitely don’t pass the basic food rule: “If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it.”

So-called “enhanced” waters are yet another in a long line of marketing ploys designed to get you to poison your body under the guise of health.  Be smart.  Read your ingredients.  Don’t be a victim of false advertising!  Water — pure, filtered H2O, gives your body all the hydration it needs, and does not need to be a source of vitamins in your diet.  Eat healthy, and take some high-quality supplements if you need a vitamin boost!  (Check out our Basic Supplement Guide to find out which supplements you may need.)

So what do you do if you just aren’t a big water person?  There are definitely safer and more natural unsweetened, lightly flavored waters out there, like MetroMint and Hint Water, but the safest and healthiest option is simply to flavor your water yourself!  A squeeze of lemon or an infusion of yummy berries and herbs is delicious, and gives you control over factors like quality, organics, and intensity of flavor.  Check out our review of the adorable and eco-friendly Glass Water Bottle with Infuser from AdNArt.

6 Reasons Why You Should Drink Water – Nature’s Medicine

6 Reasons Why You Should Drink Water – Nature’s Medicine | The Organic Beauty Blog

We all know we need at least eight glasses of water a day for our bodies to function properly. Drinking water (either plain or in the form of other fluids or foods) is essential to your health and can help fight and prevent diseases, keep your skin clear, make you lose weight – the reasons to drink this magical, life-sustaining substance are endless. Just like we think of other nutrients, we should think of water as a nutrient your body needs that is present in liquids, plain water, and foods. All of these are essential daily to replace the large amounts of water lose each day from skin evaporation, breathing, urine, and stool, and these losses must be replaced daily for good health.

When your water intake does not equal your output, you can become dehydrated, which can lead to all kinds of diseases and health problems! Check out the book, Water for Health, for Healing, for life: You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty!, By F. Batmanghelidj, M.D. The description reads “Asthma, allergies, arthritis, hypertension, depression, headaches, diabetes, obesity, and MS. These are just some of the conditions and diseases that are caused by persistent dehydration. But there is a miracle solution that is readily available, all natural, and free: water”.

As you might know, coffee, tea, soft drinks and alcohol, and all the other drinks we pour down our throats without knowing the consequences (or just ignoring them) dehydrate the brain. It is believed that Alzheimer’s disease might just be a result of long-term dehydration of the brain. Which could mean that people are not demented, only thirsty. Read the book to find out more, it is truly interesting and eye-opening.

Here are six reasons why you should be drinking more water every day:

1. Balance of Body Fluids. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. Through the posterior pituitary gland, your brain communicates with your kidneys and tells it how much water to excrete as urine or hold onto for reserves to hydrate the body.

2. Water for weight loss. For decades, water has been one of the main staples for dieters as a weight loss strategy. While water itself doesn’t magically make you lose weight, substituting it for other beverages can certainly help because of its non-existent calories. If you choose water over a caloric beverage like juice, soda, or alcohol, and eat a diet higher in water-rich foods that are healthier and more filling, you will naturally eat less. Foods with high water content such as fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups and beans, have higher volume and are absorbed more slowly by the body, which helps you feel full.

3. Energizing Muscles. Cells that don’t maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes contract, which can result in muscle fatigue. When muscle cells don’t get enough fluids, they don’t work as well and your performance can be impaired.

4. Beautiful skin. This might be one of the best reasons to drink water, which has done wonders for my skin. Your skin contains plenty of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. Dehydration makes your skin look more dry and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration. Also skin disorders such as acne can be greatly improved with water intake in combination with a clean diet. You can also help “lock” moisture into your skin by using moisturizer, which creates a physical barrier to keep moisture in.

5. Water Helps Your Kidneys. Body fluids transport waste products in and out of cells. The main toxin in the body is blood urea nitrogen, a water-soluble waste that is able to pass through the kidneys to be excreted in the urine. Your kidneys cleanse your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is enough. When you’re getting enough fluids, your urine flows like it should, and is light in color and free of odor. When your body is not getting enough fluids, urine concentration, color, and odor increases because the kidneys hold onto extra fluid for bodily functions. The color of your urine is the perfect test to determine if you’re dehydrated. If it’s anything other than clear or pale, pale yellow, you need more water, stat!

6 Reasons Why You Should Drink Water - Nature's Medicine | The Organic Beauty Blog6. Water Helps Maintain Normal Bowel Function. Being hydrated means keeping things flowing along your gastrointestinal tract like it should, which prevents constipation. When you don’t get enough fluid, the colon pulls water from stools to maintain hydration and the result we get is constipation, or small, dry “rabbit poops”. Adequate fluid and fiber is the perfect combination, because the fluid makes the fiber swell and it acts like a broom to keep your bowel functioning properly, so make sure you get enough fiber from fruit and vegetables.

Give Your Water A Delicious Flavor Boost!

By: Natasha Uspensky, CHHC

I myself admit that I am not a huge water person.  By which I mean that I didn’t grow up drinking lots of water, and pure, plain water just doesn’t do it for me.  This has made it a bit of a challenge to drink enough water throughout the day.  My trick is making my water super yummy by infusing it with lemon, cucumber slices, ginger, or berries.  At home or at the office, this is easy to do, but it’s hard to infuse water on the go!  Enter this adorable glass Flavor Infuser Water Bottle from AdNArt ($16.00 on The Organic Beauty Store).

Try yummy flavor infusions like:

  • Fresh or frozen raspberries and mint leaves
  • Lemon slices and fresh thyme
  • Fresh blueberries and sliced ginger
  • Fresh mangoes and basil
  • Orange slices and lavender

Drinking plenty of water is vital for detoxification, weight loss and management, beautiful skin and hair. No more excuses for not drinking your 8 glasses a day!

5 Tips to Beat a Cold in Two Days Flat!

By: Natasha Uspensky, CHHC

5 Tips to Beat a Cold in Two Days Flat! | The Organic Beauty BlogI don’t know about you, but my body has a wicked way of letting me get sick at precisely the worst possible times.  I got laryngitis smack dab in the middle of my first big orchestra gig singing in Cleveland; I got terribly sick about a week before my wedding;  I got a sinus infection right before going home for the holidays last year.  Just like clockwork, two days before we leave to spend Thanksgiving (and my birthday!) with my family in Minneapolis, I caught a cold!

But this year, I was determined to do everything I could to get better ASAP, before the plane and the festivities and the traditional Russian vodka and zakuski could turn a cold into something much more unpleasant.  And guess what?  It worked!  With the right mix of traditional and natural remedies, and a bit of rest, you too can beat a cold in just two days, so you’re not walking around coughing and sniffling for weeks!

Here are my top tips for killing that cold, fast.  Follow each and every one, and you’ll be right as rain!  But it’s important not to skimp, especially on the first recommendation.  To get better, you need to give your body the chance to get better, which is doing completely the opposite of what we’re taught in terms of “powering through” and medicating (and thereby ignoring) each of our bodies’ symptoms.  Give yourself a break, and shower some extra loving care on your system.   That’s the trick, and it works.

1.  Take a day off.

The number one worst thing you can do for your body when you start to come down with something is “power through” and act like you’re not sick.  A cold or other virus is not in your head, and you can’t trick yourself into getting better.  By downing Dayquil and trudging off to work, you are not only exposing everyone around you to your bug, but you are pretty much ensuring that your cold will last much longer.  When you’re starting to get sick, you need to do everything you can to support your immune system and give your body a chance to heal up.  Stress at the office and germs on the subway all put added strain on your system, and don’t allow your immune system to do it’s job!  So take a sick day, stay home, catch up on your favorite shows, and leave yourself plenty of time to do all the great self-care below… One sick day now is better than a week later!

2.  Take care of your nose.

If you don’t already have and use a Neti pot, get one, and get one now.  This is your secret weapon for avoiding seasonal colds and allergies, and can also be a huge boost to your system once you’ve gotten sick.  A neti pot irrigates your nasal passages with salt water, which flushes out irritants and bacteria, loosens up mucous, and clears up a stuffy or runny nose.  Most neti pots come with a salt mixture but if yours doesn’t, you can just use 1/2 tsp of sea salt per 16 ounces of water in your neti.  I recommend using a neti pot every other day throughout the whole cold season, if you’re prone to getting stuffy, but when you start to get sick, it’s especially helpful.  Use your neti twice a day (morning and night) right from the onset of cold symptoms.  And always follow it with a couple drops of nasya oil or organic sesame oil in your nose, to lubricate things and keep your nose from drying out!

3. Drink up!

When you’re starting to get sick, it is especially important to drink tons and tons of fluids… Like, way more than you think.  Basically, you should be drinking something pretty much all day long.  This flushes out your system, and supports your immune system in beating that bug!  When I’m starting to get sick, I like to alternate between a tall glass of water with Wellness Fizz or Emergen-C (to blast your system with vitamins — don’t exceed 3-4 times a day though!), ginger tea with lemon juice and raw organic honey (which act as an antibacterial tonic for your throat), water with lemon (super yummy, more interesting than plain water, and alkalizing for your system) , and water with apple cider vinegar (a magic, cold-fighting potion).  Make sure to avoid caffeine, and shoot for keeping your water intake at about half your body weight in ounces as a bare minimum.

4.  Make the 3 G’s (garlic, greens, and ginger) your very best friends!

Yes supplements are all fine and good, and can help give your system a boost when you’re fighting a cold, but nothing does the job as effectively as cold-fighting super foods.  Bulking up on these foods also means you’re not eating terribly unhealthy “comfort” foods (cookies, crackers, mac n’ cheese, cereal, canned chicken noodle soup, etc) that we tend to turn to when we’re sick — which actually serve to weaken our immune systems and prolong illness!

Garlic has an antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, immune boosting quality that is pretty much unparalleled… I’ll press about 2 cloves into pretty much anything I eat while I’m sick, and it definitely gets the job done.

Dark leafy greens, always a healthy powerhouse food, are absolutely loaded with vitamins and minerals your body needs to get better.  Kale and spinach are particularly amazing for this.. so make sure to have a garlicky kale or spinach salad at least once a day (but preferably more) while you’re sick.  Check out my Yummy Cold-Busting Salad recipe that packs a potent one-two punch to kill that cold!

Lastly, ginger is absolutely key for cold-fighting, due to it’s warming effect on the stomach, lungs, and entire system.  It does wonders for alleviating congestion, coughing, and a sore throat!  Make your own ginger tea by slicing up about an inch of raw, peeled ginger root and steeping it in boiling water.  Add fresh lemon and raw, organic honey (a super awesome antibacterial combo), and you’ve got yourself a potent remedy!  Drink this tea several times throughout the day for best results.  Here is my recipe for Honey Lemon Ginger Cough & Cold Busting Tea!

5.  Supplement smartly!

Taking the right supplements right when you start to feel under the weather is actually the biggest secret to nipping colds in the bud.  The goal of these supplements (which are taken in these doses short-term, just while you’re getting rid of a cold!) is to supercharge your immunity.  Here’s what I take, right when I start to feel yucky or start to sniffle:

  • Vitamin C (1000 mg 2x a day)
  • Echinacea (400 mg 2-3x a day)
  • Vitamin D (4000-6000 IU 1x a day — this is 2-3 drops)
  • Zinc (20 mg 2x a day)
  • Elderberry — (1000 mg 2x a day) only if you’re sure it’s not COVID

How To Rid Your Home of Toxic Chemicals, For Good!

Guest post by Dustin Laurence.  Dustin enjoys maintaining a healthy and environmentally low-impact lifestyle; he is a contributing author at www.flowerdelivery.net
How To Rid Your Home of Toxic Chemicals, For Good! | The Organic Beauty BlogYour home is a safe haven that provides you and your family with a comfortable place to live. While you may think you are doing all you can to keep your home safe and clean, sometimes there are toxic chemicals in your house that you may not even know about. Toxic chemicals are nasty and can cause health conditions such as asthma and a variety of other illnesses, so you want to make sure your home doesn’t contain many of these harmful substances. If you are looking for ways to get rid of toxic chemicals in your home for good so to ensure the good health of your family, here are some ways you can do this.

1. Eliminate Toxic Cleaners. Although they may get rid of the grime around your house, many household cleaners contain harmful chemicals. If you want to eliminate toxic chemicals around your home, start by getting rid of these harsh cleaners. Instead, opt for all natural type household cleaners, or do a little research and make them yourself.

2. Stop Drinking Bottled Water. While you may think drinking bottled water is better for your health, the truth is it’s not. Plastic or aluminum bottles contain harmful substances that are bad for your health. If you want a safe alternative, try drinking out of a reusable, stainless steel water bottle.

3. Buy Organic. Non-organic fruits and vegetables may contain harmful pesticides. If you want to be certain that the fruits and vegetables you feed your family are truly  healthy, try buying organic.

4. Get The Lead Out. If your home was built before 1978, chances are, it was painted with lead paint. If you want to eliminate this harmful chemical from your home, repaint your house. When you repaint, be sure to do it in a safe way that will not stir up harmful lead dust particles.

5. Change Your Bulbs. If you are currently using compact fluorescent light bulbs in your home, change them to a safer type of light bulb. Compact fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury and they can be very dangerous to the health of your family.

6. Eliminate Excess Products. Do you use hairspray, body spray and a variety of other personal care items? Well, if you do, you could be creating a hazard in your home. Try to cut down on the excessive use of personal care items and stick to only the ones you need. Many of these products contain harsh chemicals that can be dangerous when combined.

7. Change Your Shower Curtain. If you use a vinyl shower curtain in your bathroom, get rid of it! Vinyl shower curtains contain harmful toxins that can be bad for the health of your family. Replace vinyl shower curtains with a shower curtain made of a less toxic material.

While we all like to think that our homes are safe places that are free from toxic chemicals, this is not always the case. From household cleaners to vinyl shower curtains, there are a variety of common household items that can contain potentially dangerous toxic chemicals. If you want your home to be free from toxic chemicals, try following the above listed ways to help rid your home of these harmful substances.

Natural Hangover Cures

Natural Hangover Cures | The Organic Beauty BlogUnfortunately, one of the most common after effects of New Year’s eve (often times overshadowing that optimistic, post-resolution glow) is a hangover of epic proportions. No matter how religiously we adhere to the water to alcohol ratio at the start of the night, by drink 4, it’s all out the window, and we inevitably wake up on the 1st with a pounding headache and a craving for just about anything fried. But fear not, my beautiful revelers! There are several tried and true methods to avoid this wretched fate, and start the new year bright eyed and bushy tailed. Read on!

  • Kombucha: Drink a bottle before going to bed (and another if you’re still feeling a little queasy in the morning). Both the fermentation and all the amazing probiotics cure any stomach upset, and perhaps due to the minuscule amount of alcohol in kombucha, there is a also a great hair-of-the-dog effect!
  • Pickle juice: Chasing drinks with something pickled is an eastern European tradition that is not only yummy, but also super effective at preventing hangovers (just ask anyone in my Russian family!). The fermentation, high electrolyte content and salt act together to rehydrate you.  If you can, down a few big gulps of liquid from any good quality pickle after you’ve had your last drink.
  • Coconut water: This is a great trick for both the night of alcohol-drenched revelry and the morning after. The electrolytes and potassium in coconut water replenish what the alcohol leached from your system wayyyy better than plain water, and without the harmful additives and chemicals found in drinks like Gatorade.
  • Banana Hangover Smoothie: I know it’s tempting to coat your tender hangover tummy with cheesy bacon fries, but considering the beating your body went through from all that alcohol, going the traditional hangover food route is like adding insult to injury. Instead, make yourself a smoothie from a banana, a handful of blueberries, a few leaves of kale, about a cup of almond milk, and some agave to taste. This concoction replenishes lost electrolytes, potassium, vitamins, sugars, and digestive enzymes, and definitely does more for your body than a fried egg and cheese sandwich!
  • Omega-3’s: A super potent anti-inflammatory, omega-3’s combat some hangover symptoms that appear externally as well as internally.  Red, dry, blotchy skin, puffy eyes… all those “what did you do last night” signs that you’re better off avoiding.  Take some before bed as well as in the morning!
Lastly, water, water, water.  Drink it while you’re out, drink a ton when you get home, and drink a ton when you wake up.  It is the single best way to prevent and treat a hangover.  For an even more potent effect, drink water with lemon!  And honestly, all this aside, take it easy on the drinking, for pete’s sake!  Getting wasted is one of the worst things you can do for your immune system, digestive track, skin, and obviously your liver.  So drink in moderation, and have an amazing, beautiful New Year’s Eve!!
