Foods for Perfect Hair

Foods for Perfect Hair | The Organic Beauty BlogWhat you eat plays just a big a role in creating smooth, clear skin, and shiny, luscious hair as the products you use.  Check out 5 Foods to Maximize Beauty for the best foods for healthy skin, and read on for the best nutrients and foods to prevent dry, wintery hair, hair loss, and ways to eat your way to lusciously healthy locks…  Luckily, the foods below aren’t just the key to amazing hair, they are a blueprint to ideal health!

Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Foods for Perfect Hair | The Organic Beauty BlogFound in sardines, salmon, walnuts, flaxseeds and seaweed

One of the best nutrients for overall beauty, including hair, omega-3s prevent inflammation and keep our systems moisturized and healthy.  Stock up on these foods to keep hair shiny and lush, prevent dry scalp and hair loss, and promote hair growth!

Vitamin B12 & B7 (Biotin)
Foods for Perfect Hair | The Organic Beauty BlogFound in fish, beans and legumes, whole eggs, swiss chard, berries, carrots, nuts and nut butters and oatmeal

These two forms of vitamin B are key for healthy hair, and promote hair growth, strength, elasticity, and prevent breakage!  In conjunction with a good conditioner, a diet rich in these foods will ensure the healthiest hair possible.

Protein
Foods for Perfect Hair | The Organic Beauty BlogFound in eggs, beans, fermented soy like tempeh, quinoa, nuts, fish, and free-range chicken

You need to eat a moderate amount of healthy proteins every day to maintain hair growth and strength.  Protein is a building block of hair, so if you find that your hair is dull, brittle and prone to breakage, increase your consumption of healthy protein to literally build better hair!  But the emphasis here is on healthy — a diet with too much animal protein like red meat and pork increases risk of cancer and other diseases, so stick to the foods above!

Vitamins A & C
Foods for Perfect Hair | The Organic Beauty BlogFound in leafy greens like kale, spinach, and chard; orange foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, and bell peppers; cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, brussel sprouts, and broccoli; and fruit like strawberries, citrus, and kiwi.

In combination, these vitamins help your body to produce sebum, which is what gives you beautiful, shiny hair. Load up on these foods, and you’ll need to use less product and synthetic oils to keep your hair from drying out!  Not to mention, these superfoods keep you healthy, energized, and boost your immunity.

Zinc
Foods for Perfect Hair | The Organic Beauty BlogFound in nuts and seeds, seafood like oysters, scallops, lobster and shrimp, and oatmeal

Zinc is a vital nutrient that prevents hair-loss and keeps hair full.  Increase consumption of these foods preemptively if you have a family history of thinning hair or baldness, or just to make sure your hair stays put as you age!

Sarah Villafranco of Osmia Organics

On my quest for the ultimate in so-natural-you-could-eat-it skincare that actually works, I was super stoked to discover Osmia Organics, and the super knowledgable skincare expert behind it, Sarah Villafranco.  I’ve been using Osmia skincare products for the last few weeks, and am just as impressed with the amazing quality of the organic ingredients as I am the awesome effects it’s had on my skin!

I love the calming Gentle Foaming Cleanser, which leaves my skin super soft, clear and clean.  Ingredients like organic aloe juice and organic chamomile extract help with redness and breakouts, while organic green tea and marshmallow extract have anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating effects on the skin.  Another favorite is the Facial Calibration Serum, which I was a bit nervous about using on my oily skin, but was thrilled that, as promised, it actually soaked into my skin and made it less oily throughout the day, while keeping it super soft and supple.  Organic grapeseed oil and black seed oil have awesome anti-aging effects as an added bonus!  But the product I’m totally addicted to is the is the luscious Body Oil, which comes in a million different delicious scents to match your mood and personality.  I love slathering on the woodsy, herbal smelling Forest scent after every shower to smooth my skin and totally invigorate my senses.

I talked to Sarah about what led her to create Osmia Organics (after nine years as an emergency physician!), and also learned about her amazing remedy for perioral dermatitis (an annoying and mysterious skin affliction I sometime fall prey to in the winter months):

1. Tell us about the philosophy behind Osmia Organics?

Really, it comes down to two concepts.  The first is caring about and wanting to KNOW what you are putting on your body.

Sarah Villafranco of Osmia Organics

There are no secrets with Osmia.  All of our ingredients are listed on the labels, and on the website.  We really, truly don’t have any icky chemicals or fillers to hide.  The second concept is rooted in THIS moment, THIS now.  We hope you will take a few seconds to sense each Osmia product you are using.  We are all insanely busy – this is a fact of life for most of us.  But being able to weave moments of scent or texture into your day is an honor for Osmia.  And we hope it carries forth into the rest of your life.  Because all of life’s precious, tiny moments can either go noticed or unnoticed – we hope to help you notice them.

2. What were you doing before you started Osmia, and what brought on the career change?

I spent nine years as an emergency physician, and I don’t regret a single one of them.  I was privileged to see people in their most trying moments – when they needed to know someone genuinely cared about them and their loved ones.  I never lost sight of the fact that it was a rare opportunity to know people in their least edited form, and I hope I was able to touch some lives meaningfully.  But, I started to get a bit frustrated with the healthcare system in general, and, at times, with Western medicine in particular.  I have always believed that the least invasive treatment is the starting point in medicine.  But our culture no longer embraces that idea, and has become accustomed to narcotics and antibiotics as a way of life.  This, in combination with a timely soap-making class, opened the door to this next phase of my life.  I love what I do now so much that I can’t really call it work, even though the hours I log more than match those I worked in the ER!

3. What sets Osmia apart from other organic beauty products on the market?

Osmia brings together natural ingredients and luxury skin care in a very conscious way.  We want each product you purchase to feel really special to you, as if you had stumbled upon it in a tiny shop while strolling down a secret side street.  The ingredients have been chosen and combined with great intention, resulting in the fewest, least processed, highest quality ingredients we can use for the desired effect of each product.  We are a small company, and maintain complete control of our formulation, manufacturing, and packaging.   And, my scientific background allows me to screen ingredients and the claims made by their suppliers with a fairly critical eye, allowing the discerning consumer to put that burden on me, for once.

4. What is your favorite Osmia product, and why?

That’s a bit like asking which one of my daughters I prefer – impossible to answer.  Juniper Fire holds a special place in my heart as my first perfume, and one that appeals to a great number of customers.  Honey-Myrrh Lip Repair is a favorite – I love the way it is still on your lips in the morning, and I find it to be an extremely effective product.  And the body oils may be my favorite in terms of the sensory experience – the smells are divine, and the feeling of your skin after using the oils is pure velvet – even in Colorado.  How’s that for dodging the question?

5. Many Organic Beauties have sensitive skin. Does Osmia have any products that are recommended for skin with eczema, acne, dry spots or Rosacea?

Certainly.  The Purely Simple Face Cream was developed for a friend with ridiculously sensitive skin and lots of allergies.  She used all natural products on her children, and was still using Cetaphil (the recommendation of most dermatologists) on her own skin, despite the fact that it is a petroleum-based product.  She said everything else made her face react.  That was a perfect challenge for me!  She has been using Purely Simple for over a year now, and loves it.

I, myself, have a condition called perioral dermatitis, which initially fueled a lot of my research and product development.  (There is an article on my site about the condition. In fact, many people suffer from it, and have been misdiagnosed with eczema or acne.)  For true eczematous and psoriatic conditions, I usually steer people to the Organic Tea Bath or the Milk Bath, the Oh So Soap, and the Unscented Body Oil.  For oily or acne-prone skin, I recommend the Gentle Foaming Cleanser or the Black Clay Facial Soap, while dry skin prefers the Rose Clay Facial Soap (don’t be afraid of soap on your face – it won’t dry you out!).   And for pesky blemishes, the Spot Treatment is quite powerful, without leaving the blemish crusty and red while it heals.

6. What is your skincare routine?

I use the Black Clay Facial Soap twice a day.  I follow with the Active Gel Nutrient Serum (perioral dermatitis likes water-based products) and the Purely Simple Face Cream.  I take a less-is-more approach, due to my perioral dermatitis, and I gently exfoliate no more than once a week.  Just as importantly, I exercise daily, eat a crazy healthy diet, drink lots of spring water, and use sunscreen religiously.  And I laugh – A LOT.

Newsflash: Shorter Workouts More Effective!

Newsflash: Shorter Workouts More Effective! | The Organic Beauty BlogNew research that recently appeared in the American Journal of Physiology shows that 3o minute workouts actually have as good, and often even better, effects on weight loss, calorie burning, and energy levels than 60 minute workouts!

I have long been a big fan of the shorter, more targeted workout..  I always feel drained and just generally blah after longer workouts, while regular shorter workouts leave my body feeling energized and fabulous.  So I’m thrilled that there is now research supporting this much more pleasant method of exercise!

The key is to workout in a smart and targeted manner to make the most of the shorter duration.  Opt for a combination of cardio and strength training for maximum results, and alternate between the parts of your body you work.  Shoot for working out 5 days a week, with 1-2 of the days dedicated to pilates or yoga.

Check out some of these great 30 minute workouts!

Start Working Out! Now!

Start Working Out! Now! | The Organic Beauty BlogYeah, yeah… You don’t have time to workout. You’re so, insanely busy that you can’t fit in 20 minutes on a mat in front of your tv with your favorite exercise DVD. Blah, blah, blah. Listen, sister, we both know that’s a load of hooey. Time isn’t the issue. Everyone has an extra 20 minutes, or can make room for it. Sometimes it’s a bit of the ol’ laziness, sometimes it’s simply not knowing what workouts to do (or which won’t make you cringe). Often times it’s a legitimate (albeit pretty suppressed) fear that if you just make the time, you’ll be out of excuses for why you’re out of shape, or a little heavier than you’d like to be. You would actually have to start living the most fulfilled and awesome life you can, which takes some work and commitment. Whatever your reasons, make it a point to cut the crap with yourself. Today. Right now. Not tomorrow, or after this weekend, or when work calms down. Now.

Don’t know where to start? A big mistake we tend to make with our health is getting super ambitious, biting off a little more than we can currently chew, and then petering out when we lose interest or focus. How many times have you vowed to start working out 5 days a week, or to cut out sugar completely, or to eat greens twice a day, everyday? How long did that last?

The trick is to ease yourself into big lifestyle changes, that you can then build on until you get where you want to be.  Start making movement a part of your everyday life.  EVERYDAY.. not just on your workout days.  Do some stretches when you wake up, some leg lifts or pliés on the subway platform, bicep curls while you’re on the phone, and walk, walk, walk.  Up the stairs, down the street, walk more, walk always.  Check out 5 Great Mini-Workouts You Can Do Everyday!

Once your body starts to get the hang of regular, daily, intentional movement, it starts to crave it, which makes motivating yourself to work out that much easier.

  • Give yourself manageable workout goals.  Don’t have a gym membership?  Don’t wait until you get one… (that’s another excuse in and of itself!).  Pick up some workout videos or hell, even get on YouTube and search for any workout you like and GET MOVING!
  • If you’re starting at zero, shoot for 15-20 minutes just three days a week, and build your way up from there.  Schedule those 15-20 minutes into your calendar and make it a non-negotiable event.
  • Commit to your consistent routine for a few weeks, and then add on.  Make it 20 minutes 4 days a week, or up your workouts to 40 minutes.

Don’t start by worrying about the how’s or when’s right now.  Just. Start. Moving.  Losing weight, getting fit, eliminating cellulite, aging gracefully and slowly, and decreasing risk of all kinds of illness will not happen any other way.  You owe it to yourself to start today.

Stay tuned for my upcoming series of posts focusing on all things exercise.  The best workouts, videos, and guides out there, sorted for your workout personality!

Nip Seasonal Allergies in the Bud

Seasonal Allergies | The Organic Beauty Blog

After a blissfully allergy-free spring, I walked out of the house yesterday morning and instantly started sneezing and sniffling.  I check the allergy report for Brooklyn and saw that the pollen level was labeled as high.. which definitely explained why so many other people on the train and in my office seemed to be suffering from similar symptoms.

Seasonal allergies affect nearly 40 million Americans, which becomes really apparent this time of year. There are over-the-counter medications, of course, but many people experience side effects (dry mouth and throat, fatigue, headaches, hoarseness, feeling jittery or spacey) that can be as bad as the allergies themselves.  And long term use of prescription allergy medication is responsible for a whole host of unpleasant effects like high blood pressure, glaucoma, osteoporosis, and stunted or delayed growth in children.  Luckily, there are steps we can take to treat the symptoms naturally, or prevent seasonal allergies altogether!

Neti pots are by far the most effective weapon against seasonal allergies, and can be used as both a preventative measure and as treatment.  Basically, netis are traditional ayurvedic tools that look like little tea pots (traditionally ceramic, though commercial, store-bought netis are plastic) with a special spout small enough to fit in your nostril.  When filled with lukewarm water and a powdered saline solution, the liquid irrigates and cleanses the nasal passages, and also thins the mucus built up in there, flushing it out of your nose.  If you are prone to seasonal allergies, start using a neti pot daily a little before your symptoms would typically start.  Regular use will strengthen your nasal cilia, improving their ability to remove allergens, bacteria, and other irritants from your nose before they start causing problems.  If you’re already experiencing symptoms, you can start using your neti morning and night to flush out allergens and ease congestion.

Apple Cider Vinegar is a magic cure-all that I’ve written about before (see: The Magic of Apple Cider Vinegar), and healing the symptoms of seasonal allergies is just one of its many benefits.  When I got to work, sniffling and sneezing yesterday, I instantly poured myself a glass of water with a tablespoon of organic, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, and I kid you not, an hour later, I was totally fine.  And the effects lasted for the entire day!  I started my day off today with the same formula before I even left the house, and had absolutely no sign of allergies.. even though the pollen count was even higher today!

If you’re lucky enough to have access to local honey (like, seriously, from-within-a few-miles local is best), that can be a huge boost to your allergy fighting powers.  Regularly consuming local honey (and chewing on the honey combs too) helps to desensitize your immune system to the pollen in your area, effectively rendering it harmless to your body!  Eat 2 tablespoons of local honey (raw and organic, whenever possible) every day starting two months before allergy season, and you’ll notice a big difference!

Lastly, the right supplements can help your system fight off seasonal allergies.  Studies have found that high levels of vitamin C (around 2000 mg a day) significantly helps those prone to allergies avoid symptoms, due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant qualities.  Omega 3 fatty acids (which are another general cure-all) have also been found to decrease inflammation and symptoms of seasonal allergies.  Eating lots of foods like salmon (wild-caught) and walnuts, and/or supplementing with a high quality fish oil (around 2g a day) will help with allergies as well as a host of other health benefits.

So next time you start sneezing and sniffling, don’t reach straight for the OTC medications or sprays.. Try some natural solutions first that will boost your overall immunity and health, without any long or short term side effects!

Top 5 Beauty Foods

Top 5 Beauty Foods | The Organic Beauty Blog
We all know that what we put in our bodies has a direct effect on how we look (did you really think that huge pimple you woke up with had NOTHING to do with the Cheetos and chocolate binge the night before?), but did you know that you can custom tailor your diet to maximize your beauty and combat your problem areas? Incorporate the following foods into your diet, and you will find yourself with shinier hair, clearer, radiant skin, strong nails, and a trim mid-section… All without setting foot in the beauty aisle!  As always, shoot for organic whenever possible…

So hit your greenmarket and start eating your way to a more beautiful you!

Asparagus

This lovely green powerhouse is loaded with Vitamin E, which is an absolute beauty must.  High doses of Vitamin E have been shows to increase cell reproduction and slow the aging process.  Stave off premature wrinkles and age spots, keep your skin moist and supple, prevent dandruff and hair loss, and heal scars faster… all with this delicious summer veggie.  Try adding grilled asparagus to soups and salads, or just add a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt for a super easy side dish!

Berries

Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, oh my!  Not only are these little guys super high in Vitamin C, which regulates sebaceous glands to keep skin, hair, and nails moist and strong, and helps to produce collagen which strengthens the capillaries that feed your skin, but they ALSO have a super high antioxidant capacity, which protects your skin from free radicals and sun damage, and can prevent and reverse aging.  Phew!  How’s that for multi-tasking!  Throw some berries into your cereal or oatmeal every morning to keep them working for you all day long.  Or incorporate berries into your desserts, smoothies, and salads.  I love adding a handful of blueberries to a spinach salad!

Garlic

The amazing effects garlic has on cholesterol, immunity, cancer prevention, blood sugar, AND blood pressure have been lauded for decades.  What is a lesser known benefit is garlic’s effects on your skin and hair.  Garlic contains high levels of sulfur, which has long been used topically to treat acne.  Eating sulfur-rich garlic can have similar effects on your skin from within, clearing up acne and skin infections.  The high sulfur levels are also great for preventing hair loss, and keeping hair strong and shiny.  Basically, garlic is the single best thing for your body, inside and out!  Add garlic to everything you cook, from pastas and stews, to salads and stir fries.

Green Tea

A super potent antioxidant, green tea can stave off signs of aging, curb hunger, and keep you skinny.  But a lesser known benefit is its anti-inflammatory qualities, which protect your cell membranes, reduce sun damage, prevent all kinds of cancer, and keeps bacteria at bay.  And contrary to some (mis)information out there, a good quality green tea will not dehydrate you, and the caffeine levels are not so high that you can’t enjoy a few cups a day.  In the summer, I like to make a big pitcher of iced Genmaicha, which is green tea with roasted brown rice, which also helps regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels!

Salmon

With all the coverage its been getting in the media, we all know that Omega-3 fatty acids are vital for our overall health, keeping our hearts strong, combating depression, and staving off a slew of diseases and ailments.  But the Omega-3’s and potent levels of Vitamin D in salmon are also imperative for keeping our skin, hair, and nails strong, moist, supple, and young.  Vitamin D is also great for your pearly whites, and prevents dental decay.  As if all this weren’t enough to evidence to give salmon a permanent slot on your shopping list, it also contains astaxanthin, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that fight wrinkles and premature aging. Eat a 3 ounce portion of salmon at least once a week, but make sure it is wild-caught Alaskan salmon, which has the lowest concentrations of mercury.  I like to prepare salmon en papillote, by tucking it into two pieces of parchment paper, garnished with slices of onion, parsley, olive oil and lemon, and baking it at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes.  So yummy!

Check out my recipe for Total Beauty Salad, that incorporates all of these powerhouse ingredients!
