Vata Ayurvedic Skin Type Guide

Not sure what Ayurvedic type (dosha) is? Take our quiz to find out!

As a Vata dosha (or Ayurvedic type), you are no stranger to feeling like a leaf blowing in the wind, from one thing to the next.  You are creative, introspective, and social, but can be plagued with anxiety, uncertainty, and fear.  You are slim and have a pretty light appetite. Your energy comes in bursts and you can tire out easily if you don’t take care of yourself. Your Vata skin is similar to your Vata body — dry, cold, and a bit uneven.  When you’re in balance, you look and feel like a million bucks.  But when you’re not — when you forget to eat, don’t drink enough water, skimp on sleep, get stressed out and overwhelmed, overdo it with travel — your skin (and your gut) are the first places that show it.

VATA SKIN TYPE

Just like a Vata-type body, Vata skin is characterized by dryness and coldness. Thin, dry, and prone to patchiness and premature aging, Vata skin needs warmth and moisture (particularly from oils) to balance it out and keep it happy.  Other Vata skin characteristics are:

  • small pores
  • dark circles under the eyes
  • leathery or uneven texture
  • dark spots or uneven skin tone
  • cold hands and feet
  • dry, cracked lips and hands

The number one best treatment for Vata skin is oil.  Oil, oil, oil.  Oil keeps Vata skin hydrated, lustrous, and can even help to heal other symptoms of the Vata constitution, like constipation and anxiety.

This time of year, a natural drying out tends to take place.  The air is dryer and cooler, we sweat less, and our skin is more sensitive to the temperature fluctuations indoors as well.  I, personally, go from having dewy, glowing summer skin to having dull, dry skin in a matter of weeks once fall hits (that is, if I don’t follow my own advice below!).

Even though many of us on the coasts have been enjoying an autumnal heat wave, it’s not too soon to autumn and winter-proof your skincare routine, to prevent and treat dry skin before it get’s bad.

Here are my 5 steps and fave products to fight dry skin and keep it hydrated, glowing, and gorgeous, even as the temperature drops!

The Secret to Perfect Skin

Kindred Skincare Co. | The Organic Beauty Blog

I get asked a lot about my beauty secrets:  the secret recipe for weight loss, the magic ingredient for clear skin or to stave off the signs of aging.  Usually, I shy away from the fix-all way of thinking.  With weight loss and health concerns, there is definitely no one thing that makes all the difference (though those dark leafies come pretty close).  But with skincare, I have to break my own rule… There IS a secret to beautiful skin, and that is…

OIL.

A child of the 80’s and 90’s, I grew up fearing oils.  We bought oil-free everything when it came to skincare, and of course, that was mirrored in our eating, as we were taught that fat-free was the way to go.  Man, were we ever wrong.

2016 #skingoals: 5 Rules to Drive Away Dry Skin

5 Rules for Dry Skin | The Organic Beauty Blog
How do you like my clever use of alliteration?  Sweet, huh? I’m going to try to keep it up for the whole #skingoals series.. Just to keep you entertained!

So dry skin is the number one skincare complaint I hear about from you guys.. and I’m with you! It seems like pretty much October-March spells dry, lackluster skin, be it from the cold weather, the dehydrating indoor heating, or less moisture in the air.  Either way, it sucks.  Personally, I managed to drive away my dry skin a few years ago with the tips I’ll share below, until they all came back after I had little M. A few weeks after I gave birth, my cheeks, chin and jawline got insanely dry, and it took months of experimenting with different hydrating techniques to really make a difference.  But my pain is your gain! I was able to further refine my remedies to suit even the most stubbornly dry skin.

Follow these dry skin rules and you will be a beautiful, hydrated, goddess in no time at all! (And by no time at all, I mean anywhere from 1-3 weeks… true beauty takes time, people).
