Eat the Rainbow: Powerful Health Benefits of Colorful Foods!

By: Stephanie Heino

Eat the Rainbow | The Organic Beauty

Did you know that the color of fruits and vegetables can actually give you specific information about the benefits of a specific fruit or vegetables. Take a look at how each color is associated with certain health benefits, and learn how to eat the rainbow!

The Yellow Power. Yellow foods such as pineapple, citrus, corn, yellow tomatoes, yellow grapefruit, papaya and yellow peppers all contain important nutrients to keep the body functioning properly. For example, pineapple contains bromelain which is an enzyme that contributes proper functioning of the digestive system. Did you know that citruses can inhibit the formation of cancerous cells, and therefore protecting against breast cancer, skin cancer, etc. In addition, it’s no secret that vitamin C and folic acid found in citrus fruits have an amazing effect on the immune system by strengthening it, while also reducing the negative effect of free radicals. You may not think of corn as a miracle vegetable but it actually is a significant source of lutein and zeaxanthin which are two remarkable substances that reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration caused by aging. On top of this yellow foods are also rich in flavonoids and fitonutrients which plays a detoxifying role.
The Red Power. In fruits and vegetables like peppers, radishes, cherries, watermelon, red grapefruit, strawberries, red grapes, pomegranate, and red apples we find an important substance called lycopene which can significantly reduce the risk of prostate cancer up to 35%. This substance also has a significant role in preventing heart diseases, ovarian cancer and also for the recycling of glutathione, also called the protein of life. This is one of the most powerful antioxidants produced in our bodies and it plays an amazing role in eliminating toxins from our body. Red fruit and vegetables have so many benefits to your health, and what I found most amazing is that by eating only a half of cup of tomatoes you can reduce ovarian cancer up to 60%! Wow, I am having a salad full of tomatoes tonight, so many nutrients, super low in calories and  prevention of ovarian cancer. Score!
The Orange Power. This truly spectacular color is found in foods such as carrots, mangoes, peaches, nectarines, pumpkin, sweet potato, oranges, squash and melon, and gets its color from  beta-carotene, a terpenoid that is converted by the body into vitamin A. Vitamin A plays an important role in our body from helping to smooth the function of white blood cells to acting as an important beneficial antioxidant. This vitamin, along with two other types of carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, is essential to strengthen the immune system and to give us good vision. Beta-carotene also has a huge effect on preventing the development of cancer cells in the stomach, as well as in preventing heart diseases by decreasing cholesterol levels.
The Green Power. Green is known to be the color of life, and I think many people associate the vibrant color with health and vibrancy. We have been told to eat our greens for as long as we can remember, and once and for all, we will tell you why your parents didn’t let you leave dinner before you had eaten your leafy greens. The green pigment is found in green apples, grapes, kiwi, avocado, pistachio nuts, broccoli, spinach, zucchini, lettuce, asparagus, celery, peas, cucumber and  so many more. In green plants we find chlorophyl,l which helps in lowering the risk of liver cancer. In addition to this substance we find nutrients like potassium, fiber, folic acid, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C, iron, carotenoids and omega 3 fatty acids. As if this wasn’t enough of a reason to go make a green juice right now, we also find tryptophan in the green plants, which is a substance that helps strengthen bones and teeth, and gives us a good vision while defending our body against cancer! So go eat your greens!

Live Like a Queen for a Day and Reap the Benefits!

In our quest for “fitting in” self-care, it often becomes yet another to-do to negotiate with our schedule.  So instead of just squeezing in a few minutes of self-care here and there throughout your week, try this on for size:  Pick one day out of your week to live like a queen (or king), and enjoy life at a more royal pace.

What does this entail? Fortunately, untold riches and a cadre of minions are not necessary to reap the benefits of a royal pace.  Any one of us can adopt a more royal attitude, if even for just one day, and enjoy the calm, pampering, and refinement that comes with a life lived well.  Imagine the Queen, if you will (any queen will do), moving through her day.  There is no rushing, no yelling, no unrefined habits like eating in front of the TV or a computer.  She goes to bed early, she unwinds from her day of queenly duties with some pampering self-care, she rises in the morning calm and energized, leaving plenty of time for reflection and getting done all the things she wants to do.  This may sound like a major luxury, but I promise you, one day a week is doable, even for the busiest, most hectic lifestyle.  So give yourself this gift, and note how you feel after just one day of taking care of yourself the way you know you deserve.  You just may get addicted!

Your Royal Day

1.  Early to Bed, Early to Rise:  A queen would never be caught dead working into the wee hours of the night, or worse yet, watching reality television.  On the night before your royal day, give yourself the gift of an early bedtime.

  • Get the kids to bed (if you have them), or finish whatever work you have early and draw yourself a hot bath at 8pm, with some lovely essential oils of lavender or rose.  Soak the day away, and then crawl into bed with a good book (not a Kindle or iPad… so un-queenly!) no later than 9:30 (a very queenly bedtime).
  • With such an early bedtime, waking up a good hour or two earlier won’t be a problem!  A queen rises early and has plenty of time to take care of herself before launching into her day.

2.  A Queenly Morning:  Use your extra hour or two in the morning to meditate, do a calming workout like yoga, take an early morning walk, or do some writing.  Your morning sets the tone for your whole day, so on your Royal Day, make the morning YOURS.  Leave yourself plenty of time to get everything ready for work or the day ahead.

3. A Queen Never Rushes:  Can you imagine a queen rushing into a meeting, 5 minutes late, out of breath and harried?  Never!  For your Royal Day, adopt a policy of being early for everything.  Leave extra time for travel and commuting, and enjoy the process.  Listen to some music, and maintain a calm, intentional, unhurried pace.  Arrive where you need to be early, calmly, and with grace.

4. Eat Like a Queen:  No, this doesn’t mean pigging out on foie gras.  A queen would never pig out on anything!  She eats delicately, calmly, and healthfully.  She eats in an undistracted, lovely setting, and she enjoys her meals.  You can do this too!  In fact, on your Royal Day, you must.  Leave yourself plenty of time for each meal (a queen never eats on the run!), and eat some delicious, healthy food in a calm, undistracted space.  Sit at a table (not your desk!), or enjoy a meal outside.  MAKE TIME for your meals so they can be an enjoyable, mindful event instead of a rushed afterthought.  If you don’t have time to cook, than eat out somewhere lovely or order in (very queenly) from your favorite healthy restaurant.  Set the table, light some candles, and savor.  No cell phones, no TV, no work.

5.  Take a Queenly Stroll:  As every royal period film has shown us, royals love their meditative strolls.  You may not have access to a manicured garden, but you can certainly take time out of your day for a leisurely stroll.  After lunch, take a walk in the fresh air, clear your head, calm your thoughts, and reenergize for the remainder of your day.  Breathe, observe, and enjoy your surroundings, if only for 1o minutes.

6.  A Queen Never Multi-tasks:  Can you picture a queen checking her email, talking on the phone, eating and working all at same time?  Never!  Today, if only for a day, practice the art of focusing on the task at hand, one thing at a time.  This is crucial to maintaining your queenly pace of calm and balance. Block out time to accomplish what needs to get done, and when you find yourself drifting and getting distracted, just pause, breathe, and return to the single-minded activity before you.  Throughout your Royal Day, be present to the moment you’re in.  If you’re speaking to someone, really listen, in an undistracted state.  In the evening, set aside some quiet time to relax with a single task.  Read a book in your favorite chair, knit, write, paint,

7.  Maintain a Queenly Demeanor:  Power-crazed, beheading monarchs aside, a queen would never lose her temper or raise her voice.  Throughout your Royal Day, if you feel yourself losing control or getting angry, pause, close your eyes and take a breath.  Maintaining an external calm makes it so much easier to maintain an internal sense of calm!  If you get stuck in a situation, ask yourself, what would the queen do? (WWQD??)

8.  A Queen Observes… And Delegates:  Obviously you still have to be productive on your Royal Day… Things need to get done.  But take a page out of the queenly book, and learn to delegate, if only for this one day.  At work and at home, try not to freak out if things aren’t done just so, if a bed isn’t made, or if someone dropped the ball.  Calmly and gently delegate the task to someone else, or just breathe and leave it be.  A true queen doesn’t rush to fix others’ mistakes, or point out their flaws.  She moves through her queenly day observing, but not engaging.

9.  Be a Kindly Queen:  A good queen takes time for the small kindnesses that let those around her know they are appreciated.  On your Royal Day, take the time to call your mom or a close friend and tell them you love them.  Write a handwritten thank you note for a gift you received or a meeting you had.  Complement those around you.  You’ll find that when you radiate kindness, it calms those around you as well, making your entire environment more balanced, serene, and, well, queenly!

10.  A Queen Makes Time for Herself:  Throughout your Royal Day, be mindful of what you need.  A queen makes sure her needs are met, and so should you!  If you need a break, take it.  If you’re dying to hit the gym, or have some quality time with your special someone, make time for it.  Maybe all you need is an hour to yourself… take it.

This is just one day out of your life, but the benefits you’ll reap are boundless.  Make note of how it felt to prioritize your needs, to not rush, to move through your day calmly, gracefully, and with purpose.  You might want to adopt some of these queenly habits on a daily basis.  Or, if not, make room in your life to give yourself this day with some regularity, if not weekly, than a few times a month.  You may find that the more often you let yourself live like a queen, the more queenly you’ll naturally become in your daily life.  These habits are amazing for developing mindfulness, for decreasing stress and anxiety, and for living with more balance.

5 Ways To Achieve Happiness And Simplify Life

By: Stephanie Heino

5 Ways To Achieve Happiness And Simplify Life | The Organic Beauty BlogDid you know that approximately 121 million people across the globe have some form of depression? It doesn’t necessarily have to be a long-term, clinical ailment…We’ve all experienced some form of depression, and it’s never any fun. When asking people what they want to achieve in life, the most common answer is happiness. We all want to be genuinely happy. We all want to have that feeling of happiness that is  independent of loss or gain. What stands in the way is our negative beliefs, thought patterns and our way of believing in and acting on the negative.

Here are some ideas to help you achieve genuine happiness and strengthen you inner faith:

1. Live in the present moment

Don’t waste time worrying about things you can’t control. You can’t control the past, and there are only some aspects of the future that you have any influence over. Make an effort to focus instead on the present moment, and what you can control! We all go through ups and downs in our lives, and by being adaptable and more present right now you will also feel more comfortable. Worrying is almost like praying for what you don’t want, since you focus so much on the bad things. And according to the law of attraction, you will attract all kinds of negativity by focusing on it!

5 Ways To Achieve Happiness And Simplify Life | The Organic Beauty Blog2. Don’t overthink, follow your heart

When you overthink things you begin to listen to your fear and believing it is real which will keep you from reaching your full potential in life. We are all experts on listening to what other people thing instead of asking ourselves how we feel about a certain situation in life. When I feel with my heart rather than with my brain, then I truly act on my intuition, which helps me tap into this amazing unlimited source of happiness that I know I can feel.

3. Stop numbing yourself.

I have written before about the danger of numbing your true feelings with different addictions. It is an endless, destructive cycle wherein we use  food, shopping, drugs, alcohol and over-analyzing to keep ourselves from feeling anything negative.  Often times the act is triggered by a negative emotion we want to suppress (loneliness, boredom, anger, stress, etc.). In order for us to be truly happy, we need to learn how to deal with our emotions, and not just cover them up.

4. Delete other people’s opinions

We all have different opinions about pretty much everything and that is what makes us all unique. But, what we have to remember is not to take what other people say as our truth because this can harm our confidence, self-esteem, and lead to all kinds of unhappiness. What has helped me a lot is to understand that what other people say is a reflection of them, and not you.

5 Ways To Achieve Happiness And Simplify Life | The Organic Beauty Blog5. Take care of your health.

How you treat your body will make a huge difference on your happiness and well-being. If we do not  take care of ourselves and our bodies, nothing else will matter either, so it is very important to make changes in order to eat better, exercise regularly and make your body the best version it can be.

While you’re at it, take a look at these tips too:

  • Recognize your unique self.
  • Let go of what no longer serves you.
  • Love yourself and get comfortable in your own skin.
  • Be open-minded.
  • Feel your feelings.
  • Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.
  • Release attachments.
  • Practice forgiveness.
  • Follow your heart.
  • Stop engaging in drama.

2013 Dirty Dozen — Highest Pesticide Produce

The Organic Beauty 2013 Dirty Dozen

Organic produce is now on more tables than ever before, which spells great news for our country’s future rates of cancer, autism, and fertility disorders (all of which increase with persistent exposure to pesticides and insecticides).  Unfortunately, it can still be cost prohibitive for many families to buy organic produce.  Staying on top of each year’s Dirty Dozen list of most highly contaminated produce is a super cost-effective way of selecting which foods to buy organic, and which are safe to buy conventionally.  Buy these dozen highly sprayed fruits and vegetables organic whenever possible, and scroll down to this year’s Clean Fifteen to find the least sprayed crops that are safe to buy non-organic.

13 Reasons To Smile

By: Stephanie Heino
13 Reasons To Smile | The Organic Beauty Blog
Did you know it only takes 17 muscles to smile, and 42 muscles to frown? Why don’t we smile more often? Everyone can fake a smile, but a fake smile use fewer muscles than genuine smiles, which also involve muscles around the eyes. If you have to fake a smile, try to make it as real as possible, think of happy memories or visualize your favorite people and places because it really makes a difference in what others see and in how you feel. I promise it will actually transform into a genuine in smile if you practice. Every year, we spend billions of dollars trying to boost our health with different supplements, fitness routines, gyms, and health care. What we don’t’ know is that there are so many free things you can do to boost your health, and save all these money. One of the easiest free ways to boost your mood, your longevity, health and pretty much your whole lift is to smile. Often, and as much as you can. Smiles do a lot more than simply showing the world that you are happy. Check out the following reasons to smile:

1. Lower Heart Rate. Smiling slows the heart and relaxes the body, which leads to that our heart work without overworking. People who smile and laugh often have lower blood pressure and are less likely to develop heart disease.

2. Reduce Stress. Stress is a common problem in the modern world, and is a large cause of many existing health problems today. Stress relief may be as simple as smiling a little more throughout the day. Smiling releases endorphins that counteract and diminish the stress hormones (good for lowering cortisol levels, meaning good for weight loss!)

3. Better Mood. The endorphins do more than make us stress less because they actually lift our mood too. If you are feeling down anytime of the day, put a smile on your face, even if it isn’t entirely genuine at first, and turn your entire day around with easy and free. No pills included!

4. Get More Productive. Smiling has been shown to increase productivity while performing tasks. This also explains why silly Internet pictures of cute animals can actually get people motivated and working harder after a few moments of smiling or laughter. I read this somewhere, and if you try it yourself, that is the best proof of that it is true.

5. Encourage Trust. Studies show that we are more trustful of people who smile genuinely and often. Trust is an important part of social health when dealing with people, both with family, friends but also with acquaintances. So in short we can say that relationships are built on smiles.

6. Smile As Painkiller. Smiling and laughter both have been shown to lessen pain, because when we smile endorphins are released which lift our moods, and are proved to act as natural painkillers too.

7. Increase Attention. When we stress we limit our attention so we can only focus on one thing since the body kicks into fight or flight mode. Smiling counteracts this whole scenario and widens our attention again, making us being able to multitask and open up our insights to our subconscious mind.

13 Reasons To Smile 2 | The Organic Beauty Blog
8. Smiling Is Contagious. If you smile, 50% of people the people that see you tend to smile back. This spreads the health benefits throughout those around you and it comes back to you several times as well.

9. Build Attraction. Smiling makes people more attractive, and this is especially true for women. Men are more likely to find a woman who smiles attractive rather than one who simply makes eye contact, while us women aren’t necessarily drawn in by a man’s smile.

10. Be Successful. Those who smile are more likely to earn more money through tips and raises in their professions since a smile can make you seem confident, self-assured, and on top of your work.. They are also more often approached with business ideas and offered advancements.

11. Look Younger. Smiles naturally lift the face so instead of having a facelift make sure to smile a lot to look younger, around 3 years younger on average according to studies.

12. Longevity. The effects of a good smile can do more than just make you look pretty and make you look younger. People who smile more often live longer too, around 7 years longer than most. It releases stress, helps the heart, and much more to keep you healthy longer – Amazing!

13. Smiling Boosts Immune System. Smiles help the body relax and this lets the immune system react more quickly and effectively against invaders. So if you want to prevent all kinds of sicknesses and diseases make sure to put that smile on today!

Make sure to smile today!

Naturally Treat Candida Overgrowth

By: Stephanie Heino

Candida is a systemic fungal infection that as much as 70% of the population might suffer from. Candida is a type of yeast that occurs naturally in the human body. Its main job is to aid with digestion and nutrient absorption, but when overproduced, Candida breaks down the wall of the intestine and penetrates the bloodstream, releasing toxic byproducts into your body and causing leaky gut. Sometimes an imbalance in the amount of natural gut bacteria causes excessive growth of the Candida yeast population. Taking antibiotics or eating a diet high in sugar and processed foods can often times lead to this overgrowth of yeast.  This type of yeast infection, sometimes called Candidiasis, negatively affects several organ systems which can lead to many different health problems, ranging from digestive issues and depression to acne, joint pain, sore throat, constipation, gas, heartburn and kidney infections.

10 common Candida symptoms

  1. Skin and nail fungal infections (such as athlete’s foot or toenail fungus)
  2. Feeling tired and worn down, or suffering from chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia
  3. Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, or diarrhea
  4. Autoimmune disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative colitis, Lupus, Psoriasis, Scleroderma or Multiple sclerosis
  5. Difficulty concentrating, poor memory, lack of focus, ADD and ADHD
  6. Skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, hives, acne, itchy scalp, and rashes
  7. Irritability, mood swings, anxiety, or depression
  8. Vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, rectal itching or vaginal itching
  9. Severe seasonal allergies, recurrent sinus infections, or itchy ears
  10. Strong sugar and refined carbohydrate cravings

How Candida overgrowth occurs.

The healthy bacteria in your gut keep your Candida levels in check. However, several factors can cause the Candida population to get out of hand:

  • Eating a diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar (which feed the yeast)
  • Consuming large amounts of alcohol
  • Taking oral contraceptives
  • Eating a diet that is too high in beneficial fermented foods like Kombucha, sauerkraut and pickles
  • Living a high-stress lifestyle
  • Taking antibiotics that killed too many of your friendly bacteria

How to test for Candida overgrowth:

Saliva test.  First thing in the morning, before you eat or drink anything, work up some saliva in your mouth and spit into a clear glass of filtered water.  After 10-15 minutes, check the glass.  If your saliva has remained floating at the top of the water, chances are candida is not in an overgrown state.  If the saliva forms “legs” or streaks, if it sinks, or if particles are suspended in the water or at the bottom of your glass (see right), candida overgrowth is likely present.  Keep in mind, this test is not infallible.

Blood test. Make sure to check your levels for IgG, IgA, and IgM Candida anti-bodies if you have the symptoms mentioned above. These can be checked through most labs. High levels indicate an overgrowth of Candida and then you should keep on reading what actions to take.

Stool testing. This is one of the most accurate tests available, since it shows positive more often than the blood test. This will check for Candida in your colon or lower intestines and the lab can usually determine the species of yeast as well as which treatment will be affective.

Urine Organix Dysbiosis Test. This test detects a waste product of Candida yeast overgrowth known as D-Arabinitol. An elevated test means an overgrowth of Candida, and the test will determine if there is candida in your upper gut or small intestines.

How to treat Candida overgrowth:

What not eat: Effectively treating Candida involves stopping the yeast overgrowth, restoring the friendly bacteria that usually keep them in check, and healing your gut so that Candida can no longer enter your bloodstream.  Getting rid of the Candida overgrowth primarily requires a diet low in refined carbohydrates. Sugar is what feeds yeast, so eliminating sugar in all of its simple forms like candy, desserts, alcohol and flours is necessary to kill off the yeast. In addition to removing all processed sugar, cut out fruits, alcohol and cheese from your diet from your diet as well, for at least 2-3 weeks. All fermented foods like vinegar, pickles, and kombucha need to be eliminated for a while as well.  This may seem really hard, but there are still plenty of foods that you can eat when following the Candida diet.

What to eat:  Most non-starchy vegetables, including broccoli, leafy greens, carrots, onions, tomatoes, asparagus and avocado are acceptable. Maintain your energy levels by consuming proteins, such as beans, eggs, fish, and small amounts of free-range organic chicken. Whole grains, such as brown rice or quinoa, make excellent substitutes for white rice or pasta products, which are big no-no’s on a Candida diet. To stimulate growth of helpful probiotic bacteria, make sure to take your probiotics. Herbal teas also contain compounds that fight against fungus and keep Candida levels low.

Using diet alone could take three to six months before the Candida is back under control. In severe cases, seeing a functional medicine doctor trained in detecting and treating Candida may be necessary, to be prescribed fungal medication such as Diflucan or Nystatin. If you are self-treating you can take a supplement of Caprylic Acid. This comes from coconut oil and basically makes holes in the yeast cell wall, killing it off. Restoring the healthy bacteria that typically keep your Candida population under control is a must, so you should take a good quality, potent dairy-free probiotic every day (read our article on good bacteria vs. bad bacteria). Taking anywhere from 25 to 100 billion units of probiotics should help to reduce the Candida levels and restore your levels of good bacteria. Oregano oil (3-4 drops in water twice a day) and Pau d’Arco (in supplement or tea form) both work great for killing off Candida as well. Finally, healing your gut by eliminating inflammatory foods that can harm your GI tract and introducing foods that aid in digestion and nutrient absorption, will prevent Candida from working its way through your body, and will dramatically improve your overall health.

6 Reasons Why You Should Drink Water – Nature’s Medicine

By: Stephanie Heino

6 Reasons Why You Should Drink Water – Nature’s Medicine | The Organic Beauty Blog

We all know we need at least eight glasses of water a day for our bodies to function properly. Drinking water (either plain or in the form of other fluids or foods) is essential to your health and can help fight and prevent diseases, keep your skin clear, make you lose weight – the reasons to drink this magical, life-sustaining substance are endless. Just like we think of other nutrients, we should think of water as a nutrient your body needs that is present in liquids, plain water, and foods. All of these are essential daily to replace the large amounts of water lose each day from skin evaporation, breathing, urine, and stool, and these losses must be replaced daily for good health.

When your water intake does not equal your output, you can become dehydrated, which can lead to all kinds of diseases and health problems! Check out the book, Water for Health, for Healing, for life: You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty!, By F. Batmanghelidj, M.D. The description reads “Asthma, allergies, arthritis, hypertension, depression, headaches, diabetes, obesity, and MS. These are just some of the conditions and diseases that are caused by persistent dehydration. But there is a miracle solution that is readily available, all natural, and free: water”.

As you might know, coffee, tea, soft drinks and alcohol, and all the other drinks we pour down our throats without knowing the consequences (or just ignoring them) dehydrate the brain. It is believed that Alzheimer’s disease might just be a result of long-term dehydration of the brain. Which could mean that people are not demented, only thirsty. Read the book to find out more, it is truly interesting and eye-opening.

Here are six reasons why you should be drinking more water every day:

1. Balance of Body Fluids. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. Through the posterior pituitary gland, your brain communicates with your kidneys and tells it how much water to excrete as urine or hold onto for reserves to hydrate the body.

6 Reasons Why You Should Drink Water – Nature’s Medicine 2 | The Organic Beauty Blog
2. Water for weight loss. For decades, water has been one of the main staples for dieters as a weight loss strategy. While water itself doesn’t magically make you lose weight, substituting it for other beverages can certainly help because of its non-existent calories. If you choose water over a caloric beverage like juice, soda, or alcohol, and eat a diet higher in water-rich foods that are healthier and more filling, you will naturally eat less. Foods with high water content such as fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups and beans, have higher volume and are absorbed more slowly by the body, which helps you feel full.

3. Energizing Muscles. Cells that don’t maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes contract, which can result in muscle fatigue. When muscle cells don’t get enough fluids, they don’t work as well and your performance can be impaired.

4. Beautiful skin. This might be one of the best reasons to drink water, which has done wonders for my skin. Your skin contains plenty of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. Dehydration makes your skin look more dry and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration. Also skin disorders such as acne can be greatly improved with water intake in combination with a clean diet. You can also help “lock” moisture into your skin by using moisturizer, which creates a physical barrier to keep moisture in.

5. Water Helps Your Kidneys. Body fluids transport waste products in and out of cells. The main toxin in the body is blood urea nitrogen, a water-soluble waste that is able to pass through the kidneys to be excreted in the urine. Your kidneys cleanse your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is enough. When you’re getting enough fluids, your urine flows like it should, and is light in color and free of odor. When your body is not getting enough fluids, urine concentration, color, and odor increases because the kidneys hold onto extra fluid for bodily functions. The color of your urine is the perfect test to determine if you’re dehydrated. If it’s anything other than clear or pale, pale yellow, you need more water, stat!

6 Reasons Why You Should Drink Water - Nature's Medicine | The Organic Beauty Blog6. Water Helps Maintain Normal Bowel Function. Being hydrated means keeping things flowing along your gastrointestinal tract like it should, which prevents constipation. When you don’t get enough fluid, the colon pulls water from stools to maintain hydration and the result we get is constipation, or small, dry “rabbit poops”. Adequate fluid and fiber is the perfect combination, because the fluid makes the fiber swell and it acts like a broom to keep your bowel functioning properly, so make sure you get enough fiber from fruit and vegetables.

11 Natural Anti-Allergy Remedies

By: Stephanie Heino

11 Natural Anti-Allergy Remedies | The Organic Beauty Blog

I don’t know about you, but I have certainly noticed that it is allergy season. My nose is running, and my throat is itching and I am consuming allergy pills like there’s no tomorrow. Hay fever is the most common allergic condition, where ragweed pollen accounts for about 75% of all hay fever cases in the United States. Other significant pollens that induce hay fever include various grass and tree pollens. I don’t know which one I am allergic to since I suffer in both spring and summer, but I guess it is tree pollen which develops in the spring, whereas grass and weed pollens develop in the summer. However, if hay fever symptoms persist year-round, this is known as perennial allergic rhinitis, and this form of hay fever may or may not be due to pollens. So make sure to see a doctor if you have problems year-round to get the right cure for you. Around 50 million Americans have allergies, and most Americans reach for prescription and over-the-counter antihistamines to treat their condition, as soon as they feel it coming. But hold on; natural medicines can offer significant advantages even in this case. Keep in mind that antihistamine drugs offer only symptomatic relief, and don’t solve the actual problem. The drug companies love these drugs because they only suppress symptoms, but don’t really effect a cure. Instead they create dependence, and of course, most beneficial to drug companies, the drugs are expensive, so they gain huge profits.

Before taking the easy way and reaching for OTC medications, try these 11 natural treatments:

1. Track the pollen count. With today’s technology you can actually track the pollen count in your area.  You can use this info to know when to stay indoors when pollen counts are highest. Here is a great site you can use as an allergy tracker: http://www.weather.com/health/allergy/main

2. Showers. If you are prone to seasonal allergies and spend a lot of time outdoors make sure to shower when coming inside or before bed to remove pollen, especially from your face and hair where it’s more likely to get stuck.

3. Try nasal irrigation. Get a neti pot online or at your local pharmacy and wash your nasal passages with a saline solution once or twice a day to clear it out.  If you find that your nose dries out after using a neti pot, follow irrigation with a drop of sesame oil in each nostril to lubricate the delicate lining of your nose.

4. Filter your air. Go to your nearest Home Depot and equip your home with HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters, which can be attached to central heating and air conditioner systems. The work wonders for allergies!

5. Clean your home & pets. Just like with our own hair, our pets also carry around pollen. So try to keep them out of your bedroom if you can and bathe them often. Pollen can also collect on furniture and in rugs, so make sure to vacuum everything frequently. You may want to use bedding made with Ventflex, a special hypoallergenic synthetic material. What I also recommend is to install an air purifier in the rooms you spend the most time in.

6. Immunotherapy. A popular treatment for seasonal allergies is immunotherapy, in which the patient receives a series of injections of the allergy-causing agent in minute amounts until the body builds up an immune response. At the end of three years about a third of patients will be cured. If shots aren’t your thing, the treatment can be performed with a liquid placed under the tongue, so no pain needed! It is not very fast, but you can usually see permanent results within weeks or months.

7. Quercetin. Quercetin consistently demonstrated the greatest anti-allergy effects among all flavonoids, according to a recent study. A highly bioavailable, enzymatically modified form of isoquercitrin (EMIQ) has been developed, which has shown significant effects in improving some of the symptoms of hay fever. The recommended dose of EMIQ is 100 mg twice per day.

8. Take polyphenols. A recent study showed that apple polyphenols reduced hay fever symptoms and had significant improvement in sneezing attacks and a runny nose. Take 100–250 mg of apple polyphenol extract  twice per day. You can get similar results with extracts such as grape seed, pine bark, or green tree extract.

9. Use fish oils. Fish oil is great for pretty much everything, but usually known as an immune booster as well as reducing inflammation, therefore also inflammation associated with allergies, great! The best dosage is 2,000 mg of combined EPA and DHA per day.

10. Apple Cider Vinegar. As we’ve written about before, this is a magic cure-all, and healing the symptoms of seasonal allergies is just one of its many benefits. When you feel allergies start to come on, instantly pour yourself a glass of water with a tablespoon of organic, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, and shortly after I promise you will be totally fine. And the effects really last for the entire day!  You can also start to drinking apple cider vinegar 2-3 times a day before allergy season hits.

Regularly consuming local honey (and chewing on the honey combs too) helps to desensitize your immune system to the pollen in your area, effectively rendering it harmless to your body! Eat 1-2 tablespoons of local honey (raw and organic, whenever possible) every day starting two months before allergy season, and you’ll notice a big difference!

10 Rules of Longevity and Agelessness

Dr. Deepak Chopra, one of our favorite healthy living gurus, prescribes 10 simple rules for aging gracefully and beautifully in his book Ageless Body, Timeless Mind – A Quantum alternative to growing old. We absolutely love the simplicity of these rules… So spot-on, so intuitive, and so vital for staying young, healthy, beautiful and happy.

1. Intake fresh food, eat frugally, drink wholesome liquids, abstain from stimulants and sedatives, and have a bowel movement at least once a day.

2. Maintain a high level of personal hygiene, get plenty of fresh air, sunlight and rest, have enjoyable leisure time, and satisfying hobbies.

3. Exercise, meditate, practice balanced refined breathing (pranayam) and yoga, listen to the body’s signals of comfort and discomfort.

4. Work for a happy marriage, long-term relationships, cultivate the ability to laugh easily, to make friends and keep close friends.

5. Choose a congenial occupation, go on vacation every year, be optimistic about the future, feel financially secure and live within your means.

6. Develop an easygoing personality, cultivate nonviolent behavior, and have reverence for life.

7. Live in temperate climate, enjoy a reasonable sex life, and get proper medical attention in case of illness.

8. Live in the present – accept what comes your way, appreciate it, learn from it and let go. Resisting the natural flow of things causes negative emotions.

9. Relinquish external approval, avoid being judgmental, replace fear-motivated behaviors with love-motivated ones, nurture positive emotions and express them freely.

10. Always know the world outside is a reflection of your deeper intelligence – the real “you” is within.
