Calm and cool your skin with these two ingredients

Two Ingredients to Calm and Cool Your Skin | The Organic Beauty Blog

Towards the end of summer, those of us blessed with sensitive skin seem to be in a constant state of redness.  All that sun and heat combine to create a perfect storm of oily/sweaty skin, breakouts, and sun damage which don’t seem to clear up until the cool fall weather kicks in.

For sensitive skin (Pitta skin, if we’re going to get all Ayurvedic about it), there are two skincare ingredients that can’t be beat: aloe vera and rose.  These two are great for use year round, but are particularly beneficial during the hot summer months, when sensitive skin can get particularly inflamed.  Here’s why these two cooling, calming ingredients can’t be beat:

ALOE

Aloe vera has been used since ancient times for it’s healing properties, and though it has many benefits, skincare is where it really shines.  Anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, aloe is used to soothe inflamed skin, counter the signs of aging, heal sun damage, and to treat chronic conditions such as eczema, rosacea, acne, and psoriasis.  It’s loaded with antioxidants and skin-feeding nutrients, and features two phyto-hormones (Auxin and Gibberelins) that heal wounds, soothe inflammation, and promote cell turnover.  It’s pretty much the perfect skincare ingredient!

ROSE

Rose is another ancient skincare ingredient that is basically a magical beauty potion.  Perfect for all skin types, rose petals distilled into rosewater are anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, antibacterial and antioxidant.  It balances skin’s pH and oil production, unclogs pores, reduces redness, heals inflammatory skin conditions (like dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea), and promotes cell regeneration.  Women (and men, I’m sure) as far back as ancient Egypt and India have touted it’s ability to keep skin youthful, glowing, and beautiful. As if all of that wasn’t enough, the scent of rose is soothing to the nervous system, and promotes feelings of calm, joy, and openness.

These two ingredients are such a perfect match that combining them in your skincare routine really amplifies their soothing and beautifying effects.  So you can imagine how pumped I was to discover Green Leaf Naturals, an entirely organic, all-natural skincare line that harnesses the beautifying, soothing power of these two all-star ingredients.

Pitta Ayurvedic Skin Type Guide

Pitta Ayurvedic Skin Type Guide

Not sure what Ayurvedic type (dosha) is? Take our quiz to find out!

As a Pitta dosha, your body and skin match your fiery personality.  You run hot, both physically and emotionally, which means you are the most productive, organized, and Type A of all the types.  You like things to get done, and to get them done your way.  You are passionate about the things that matter to you, and never shy away from a heated debate.  When out of balance (eating the wrong foods, overheating, not managing your stress and perfectionism), you are quite literally inflamed — prone to irritability, digestive issues (IBS, colitis, loose stool), breakouts, rashes, and inflammation of the skin and organs (pretty much anything with an -itis suffix).  Download your Pitta Dosha Guide to learn more about your type and get more tips to bring your body into balance!

PITTA SKIN TYPE

Just like a Pitta-type body, Pitta skin is characterized by inflammation and sensitivity. Combination (in terms of oiliness), fair, and prone to rashes, redness, breakouts and other reactions, Pitta skin needs cooling, calming, and gentle treatments to balance it out and keep it happy.  When in balance, Pitta skin is radiant and seems to glow from within. Other Pitta skin characteristics are:

  • a congested T-zone, often with large pores
  • oily skin
  • reddish skin or blushing easily
  • sensitive to the sun and harsh chemicals
  • lots of freckles, moles, and sun damage
  • sweat easily
  • prone to eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and pimples

The number one best treatment for Pitta skin is cooling ingredients and foods like cucumber, aloe, and rose, internally and externally. Keeping cool helps balance Pitta both inside and out, and since Pitta skin is very sensitive to diet and lifestyle changes, keeping cool and soothed needs to be a lifelong mantra as well as a skincare prescription.

What’s Your Ayurvedic Skin Type? (and why you should care)

What's Your Ayurvedic Skin Type | The Organic Beauty Blog

With so much amazing natural skincare to choose from out there, there is no longer any shortage of lovely, organic and chemical-free products to feed your skin.  But just because a product is all-natural doesn’t mean it’s going to work for YOUR skin.  Determining the best products for your unique, individual complexion is more than just choosing between lines for dry, oily, or combination skin. There is so much more intricacy in different skin types, and really knowing your skin can mean the difference between results that are just ok (or even bordering on ineffective) and straight-up gorgeous skin.

The qualities of our skin, and the types of products that really help it stay healthy and beautiful, are directly related to our body type, our digestion, and our constitution in general.  This bio-individuality is where Ayurveda really shines, and it’s one of the biggest reasons why I have been practicing this ancient healing philosophy for 8 years now (and I’m never going back).

Our Ayurvedic constitution (or dosha) gives us invaluable insight into how our bodies work and what we need to thrive — from the specific foods to eat more of or avoid to stay energized and healthy, to the herbs and supplements that will really keep our systems in balance, to the beauty and self-care products that will keep us looking young and radiant.

Click here to discover your dosha!

Your Ayurvedic skin type will generally correspond to your dosha, but in some rare cases, it may stray from your general constitution if there is a particular imbalance your body is currently dealing with.

Skin Food for Mama and Baby + Giveaway

I am a sucker for skincare that is good (and clean) enough to eat, so when I find a line of products that’s made entirely of organic botanicals, with not a single additive, preservative or chemical in sight, I get giddy.

Bee All Natural has a lovely line of products that are not only so clean and natural you could eat them (thought to be clear, I generally don’t recommend eating your skincare), but are absolutely jam packed with skin feeding nutrients to soothe, protect, nourish, and heal.  Every single organic ingredient has been carefully selected for it’s skin feeding properties, and after using the line on myself and my little on for the last month or so, I can attest to the difference that level of attention to detail makes.Skin Food for Mama and Baby | The Organic Beauty Blog

The perfect oil for all your skin glazing needs

The Perfect Oil for Skin Glazing | The Organic Beauty BlogSPONSORED POST

Ok, confession time.  I am a lazy beauty addict.  As in, if a beauty routine is going to take me more than 5 minutes, I’m out.  So when skin glazing hit the world of beauty trends this last year, you know I was first in line to get on board.

For the uninitiated, skin glazing is the ultimate in effortless, lit-from-within, glowing beauty.  And best of all, it doesn’t involve contouring, caking on layer upon layer of makeup, sparkly pearlescent highlighters, or an hour of primping.  It’s basically the anti-makeup.. and guess what? You leave the house looking healthy, glowing, youthful, effortless, and decidedly UN-Kardashian.

Skin glazing is a simple, 2-3 step process:

  1. After cleansing and toning your skin, spritz with a natural face mist

  2. While skin is still wet, mix your moisturizer (preferably one with SPF) with an awesome natural face oil and press firmly onto your skin (don’t rub!)

  3. For added dewiness, add another spritz of your face mist before heading out.

Et voila.  You’re done.  No makeup, no highlighters, just gorgeous, glowing, healthy skin.  Amazing, right?  I haven’t worn a spot of makeup on my face (except for mascara, cuz girl you know I’m never leaving the house without that) in weeks.

The key to this magical formula, however, is a really good face oil.  Since you’re wearing so few products on your face, your face oil should do double (or triple!) duty as a antioxidant serum, anti-aging hydrator, and mega glow-inducer.  Luckily for us all, I’ve found just the thing!

2016 was a banner year for natural and organic beauty.  With so many amazing brands and products to choose from, we naturally-minded organic beauties are no longer limited to choosing from insanely overpriced celebrity brands or crafted in someone’s basement hippie brands (not that we’re not obsessed with many of those).  Now we don’t have to sacrifice selection, effectiveness or budget to stock up our bathrooms and makeup bags with beautiful products that work wonders on our skin, hair and bodies, without harming your health or the environment.

Below are some of our favorite new (or new to us) products from the last year, all of which follow our strict criteria of natural beauty.

Natural Anti-Aging Treatment for Eyes

GUEST POST

Natural Anti-Aging Treatment for Eyes | The Organic Beauty Blog

The skin around our eyes is delicate, and therefore, must be treated differently than other areas of our face. The skin here is thin and prone to fine lines – it is often the first place we see the signs of aging (ah winkles!). In this article, I will teach you the best natural anti-aging treatment for eyes to delay the aging process and keep the skin around your eyes looking younger for longer (you can’t stop aging, but thankfully, you can slow it down).

My Summer Skincare Routine

One of the amazing benefits of being a beauty, wellness and lifestyle blogger is the amount of super cool products I get to try and write about.  It is one of my missions to discover the best in natural beauty, health, and sustainable living products, and to share with you everything I’ve discovered!  To that end, I’m starting a seasonal series of updates on my current skincare routine.  Due to the sheer number of products I get sent, my routine changes pretty regularly, but favorite products tend to stick around.

In the summertime, I go for three big factors in my skincare routine:

  1. Keeping pores clean (due to the natural buildup of oils in the hot weather)
  2. Antioxidants (to offset damage from the summer sun)
  3. Sun protection (SPF all day everyday, yo)

So here is my current summer skincare routine:

A workout for your skin?

A workout for your skin? | The Organic Beauty Blog

For the last two weeks, I’ve been playing with a fun new skincare toy: The Conture Kinetic Skin Toning System. Though I’m usually not one for skincare tech, for lack of a better term, Conture seemed like the real deal.  With a combination of isometric compression and low frequency vibrations (which feel like painless little tugging at your face), the Conture system is basically like a workout for your face, combined with targeted super-absorption of skin-feeding ingredients.  Being a huge advocate of moving, toning, and feeding my body the best ingredients on the planet, this particular technology felt like a logical next step.  Why shouldn’t my skin get all the same benefits?

Totally Personalized Skincare from Italy

Hekate Customized Skincare | The Organic Beauty

I am a sucker for personalization.. Be it a lovely monogram on purse, an annoyingly customized GrubHub order, or my wedding anniversary or daughter’s birthday emblazoned on everything from jewelry to albums and artwork, it’s those little personal touches that make all the difference. You’d think that with something as utterly personal as skincare, there would be more options for a totally customizable product out there — made specifically for your skin, with your chose ingredients, but alas, this is nearly impossible to find.  And it’s not easy to find a face cream for my combination, large-pored, breakout and redness-prone skin that’s starting to show signs of age. So you can imagine that I got positively giddy when I discovered Hekate Cosmetics, an Italian company that allows you to create totally personalized face cream.
