Baby-Friendly Paleo Birthday Cake & Cupcakes

When we were planning our little girl’s 1st birthday party, I knew that I wanted to stay committed to our values of sustainability and health. All too often, in the name of ease, we ditch our lofty goals of living a healthy lifestyle “just this once.” But for me, in thinking about the kind of mom I want to be and the example I want to set for my kid, I feel that big events like birthdays or parties are a perfect opportunity to stay true to the values I try to live by every day.

To that end, we made the birthday party as eco-friendly as possible with the use of sustainable, recycled, reusable and/or compostable party supplies, and ordered healthy food sourced sustainably from local farms (check out all the details here). But when it came to the baked goods, I had trouble finding healthy options that I could feel good about serving to friends, family, and babies, that didn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Must-Have’s and Tips for Airplane Travel with Baby

Little M and I are wrapping up our first solo trip (without daddy), and now that she’s at the ripe old age of 1, the experience couldn’t be more different than traveling with her as a little baby. As you’ll see below, you need much less to stay sane while traveling on a plane with an infant (or pre-crawler), but once the little tykes start moving (or, god help us all, walking), it takes quite a bit more strategy to keep baby entertained and calm, and keep parents sane.  After 8+ flights with our little one over her first year, I’ve nailed down the perfect set of must-have’s and tips for airplane travel with baby, to keep everyone comfortable, entertained, and happy (or at the very least, sane!). Check them out below!

The purest makeup for every skin type

A girl’s makeup can sometimes feel like an ingrained part of our identity.  I know women who have literally used the same mascara brand since high school. We can get so attached to our makeup choices that it’s easy to totally overlook the safety of what we’re putting on our skin! I consider choosing to use the most non-toxic, purest makeup to be an act of self-care.  Not only are we choosing not to expose our skin (and therefore our entire system) to toxic chemicals, but we are also prioritizing the safety of our loved ones (I mean, our beaus eat up plenty of our lipstick when we smooch, and of course our kiddos are exposed to the products on our face and body with every hug, smooch, and snuggle).  So I love to discover new makeup brands that put a premium on purity and safety.

Omiana Talc-Free Natural Makeup | The Organic Beauty Blog

I first discovered Omiana over a year ago (when they were known as Epic Mineral Beauty), and was super impressed by their clean, talc and mica-free makeup that worked beautifully.  They’ve since rebranded and expanded their collection to include much more than just mineral makeup, and I have to say, the new line is even more impressive and definitely more luxe.

My Summer Skincare Routine

One of the amazing benefits of being a beauty, wellness and lifestyle blogger is the amount of super cool products I get to try and write about.  It is one of my missions to discover the best in natural beauty, health, and sustainable living products, and to share with you everything I’ve discovered!  To that end, I’m starting a seasonal series of updates on my current skincare routine.  Due to the sheer number of products I get sent, my routine changes pretty regularly, but favorite products tend to stick around.

In the summertime, I go for three big factors in my skincare routine:

  1. Keeping pores clean (due to the natural buildup of oils in the hot weather)
  2. Antioxidants (to offset damage from the summer sun)
  3. Sun protection (SPF all day everyday, yo)

So here is my current summer skincare routine:

This healthier coffee is actually good for you.

Four Sigmatic Mushrooms Elixirs | The Organic Beauty Blog

I was never a big coffee drinker.  Not out of any high minded health reasons, necessarily — I just didn’t like the way it made me feel.  Jittery, anxious, higher strung… Pretty much like your average New Yorker.  Seeing as I was doing everything I could to counteract the energy of my former city, coffee just wasn’t for me.

Now that I’m a mom, and one living on the fairer (calmer) coast, there have definitely been days when I craved a good cup of joe. I would source some great organic coffee from the cafe down the street, add coconut oil (or sometimes even some grass-fed butter… more on why that’s a must here), and still, an hour later, I would find myself a little more testy or jittery or wired.

Why does this happen? Coffee does a number on your adrenals, stimulating a fight-or-flight response that can leave you feeling wired, and then depleted.  People who drink coffee on the regular pretty much live in this state, so it’s a little less noticeable.  But that fatigue you feel before you’ve had your first cup? Or at 3pm? Or in the evening? Or pretty much anytime between your cups of coffee?  Yeah… that’s adrenal fatigue.  And it is no bueno.  In addition to messing with your body and mind, this caffeinated adrenal overexertion also stimulates the release of cortisol, which leads to higher stress levels, poor sleep, premature aging, and even weight gain.

Ok, ok, so we get why coffee isn’t the best thing in the world.  Well there’s got to be a better option out there, right? One that isn’t a pseudo-coffee hippie drink (though I definitely love me some chicory)?

Boho 1st Birthday Inspiration

Minted-Boho-Floral-1st-Birthday

Well our little butterbean is 11 months, which means the count down to her first birthday has officially begun!

We’ve been knee-deep in party planning, and I have to say, I think throwing kids’ parties is going to be an unexpected perk of this whole motherhood thing.

The theme we’re going with is sort of a boho floral, which will go perfectly with our party location at a park in the Santa Monica mountains.  I’m picturing wildflower crowns, dreamcatchers, a teepee, and a beautiful naked cake (gluten-free and vegan of course) topped with pale pink blossoms.

We’re collaborating with Minted on this lovely little shindig, and I am so beyond in love with all their adorable kids’ party invites and party decorations!

I can’t wait to put the whole thing together and share the photos from the big day!

In case you’re planning your own shindig.. Minted has a sweet 4th of July sale going on that ends today!!

A workout for your skin?

A workout for your skin? | The Organic Beauty Blog

For the last two weeks, I’ve been playing with a fun new skincare toy: The Conture Kinetic Skin Toning System. Though I’m usually not one for skincare tech, for lack of a better term, Conture seemed like the real deal.  With a combination of isometric compression and low frequency vibrations (which feel like painless little tugging at your face), the Conture system is basically like a workout for your face, combined with targeted super-absorption of skin-feeding ingredients.  Being a huge advocate of moving, toning, and feeding my body the best ingredients on the planet, this particular technology felt like a logical next step.  Why shouldn’t my skin get all the same benefits?

A Non-Toxic Safe Space for Baby

Safe Non-Toxic Play Space for Baby | The Organic Beauty

When little M became mobile, we realized that our sweet, simple little play mat set up just wouldn’t be enough to keep her entertained and help her develop, all while staying safe.  I knew I wasn’t a fan of playpens, and our open floor plan just doesn’t lend itself well to creating a separate space for her, so we needed to get creative! We had the whole downstairs of our house baby-proofed, so that M could crawl around to her heart’s content, without my hovering over her all the time, and then we set out to create a safe play space for her that was functional and non-toxic, while still blending in with our modern and minimal decor (no small feat, if you’re familiar with the options out there!).

Pamper Big Papa This Father’s Day

Yes, you could get him another tie, or some camping gear, or.. I don’t know.. a keg of beer or whatever we think men want and like.  But wouldn’t it be cool to show the hardworking dad’s in our lives that we want them to pamper them?  Dad’s deserve to look good and feel pampered just as much as we do, but sometimes it can be hard to find high quality natural products that are masculine enough to appeal to burly dudes.  Here are some of my favorite new men’s products that will help big papa look smooth, clear-skinned and sexy, while feeling pampered and taken care of. Pick up a few for Father’s Day this year and watch daddy glow.
